prologue: terrorMY FINGERS TAPPED the wood of my desk as I hummed along to my music playing my headphones. I was practicing a song for our school's winter concert. Choir was the only school related thing I really excelled at. And by excelled I mean mildly good. Books and numbers never really called to me. I personally think my ears are the way to my soul.
It's 8:25 AM, right before the first bell rings. I'm usually one of the first ones in class. The air smelt fresh as windows were left slightly ajar to let in the fall breeze. The sun beamed down on me from outside and I put my head down on my desk, basking in the relaxing atmosphere. I need this time to listen to my music before my desk mate, Nayeon, comes in. She's very talkative, and I never have time to think when she's around. No offense, she was nice to me but, it was clear I was the only person she could really talk to in class.
The peace is short lived though as Cheongsan and his friends come stumbling into the classroom. Loud and energetic as always, they never change. They move towards my side of the classroom, still very loud.
I smile up at Cheongsan and Gyeongsu and they smile back at me. Our families are close as Cheongsan's mom and my mom went to college together. Cheongsan was one of the first people I met when I moved back to Hyosan. He was super friendly and invited me every time him and his friends were going somewhere after school. That's how I met all my friends now. Now that his mom has opened her new resturaunt, we see him more often that usual. My mom is always suggesting we eat there when she doesn't feel like cooking. No wonder I've put on a bit of weight. I turn off my music and turn to the group of obnoxiously loud teenagers. I notice Onjo isn't in class early like she usually is. I lean over to Cheongsan as he laughs loudly with his friends. "Hey, where's On-jo?" I ask Cheongsan with a suspicious eyebrow, cocking my head to the side a bit.
"She got caught in the storm." Cheongsan replied with a giggle. I just sigh loudly, already knowing what happened. The storm being she was late and had to mark her name down by the gate for being tardy. Gyeongsu took a seat on Nayeon's desk as he talked with Cheongsan and our other classmates. I clicked my tongue and shook my head, knowing she would make a fuss of it. Gyeongsu was definitely one of the funnier people I've met when moving here to Hyosan. He was definitely a class clown and everyone liked him, well except for Nayeon. But that was just Nayeon. That was be expected though, Nayeon was very rude to some of our classmates, especially Gyeongsu. She would never tell me why, only giving the explanation of, "He's just bad news."
It made me uncomfortable how Nayeon treated Gyeongsu but it made even more uncomfortable how if Nayeon didn't talk to me, she wouldn't have anyone. Onjo told me I'm too nice to her but I'm willing to be that if it meant she at least had someone to vent to. Nayeon has opened up to me in the past about her life at home. She's only made a few comments here and there but from what I've heard, her bitchiness is just a projection. It shields her from the same hurt she's experiences at home.
