chapter one
goneSUHYEOK AND I are running through the school grounds as we pass by horric sights. Students stumble over one another as other students pounce on top of them, bleeding and hungry. We continue to run for a while until Suhyeok spots a ladder behind some bushes near the building.
He quickly runs over to it without saying a word, propping it up so we can climb up to a window. He lets go of me as he climbs the ladder and knocks on the window. I stand by the ladder, shifting my weight impatiently as I hear the groaning sounds of the zombies become louder and louder. Daesu, one of our classmates, opens it and lets him in urgently. Daesu grabs his arms and helps him in, exclaiming in relief. I hear the sound of someone approaching me, footsteps growing closer and closer. I look behind me to see a zombie rushing my way. It's body arches and contracts as it runs towards me. I stand still, both in shock and in awe of the sight in front of me.
"Gowoon hurry, come on." They both yell at me to climb up the ladder quickly as the zombie rushes towards me. I snap out of my trance and climb the ladder quickly. I barely get there in time as the zombie brings the ladder to the ground. He grabs at it in an attempt to knock me down but Suhyeok grabs onto me just in time. I breathe heavily as Suhyeok pulls me into the classroom.
"You okay?" He examines me concerningly and I nod my head. He puts his hands on my arms, looking all over me to make sure I didn't get hurt. I chuckle while I catch my breath, exhausted from the running. "That's all you've been asking me all day." I smile, he just lets go off my arms and laughs breathily.
I turn to see some of our other classmates were already in the room, including Onjo and Isak standing by the door, holding each other. I run over to them before engulfing them in a hug. "Thank God you guys are safe. What the hell is going on?" The girls just hug me back without answering, just as confused as I am.
After a moment of catching our breaths, we rummage the classroom for a phone. You'd think it would be easy find as everyone has a phone but we turned in our phones at the beginning of class and they're all the way in the teacher's office... across the school. More zombies begin to claw at the door and windows, desperate to get inside. I try and avoid looking at them but more and more keep coming.
Isak finds a phone in one of the desk, we all rush around her to see what we can do. "Whose is it?"
"This is Yeonju's desk." She responds as she tries to unlock the phone. "Damn, it's locked."
"Anyone know her birthday?" I ask. "Birthday?" I hear Onjo mumble but no one responds. Nayeon urges Isak on, tapping her on her arm. "Do something already. They're crowding around the room!" Nayeon pleads, looking back and forth between the doors and Isak but Isak just rolls her eyes in annoyance. "I said it's locked. I can't do anything." Isak exclaims loudly, pulling her arm away from Nayeon.
"There she is. Give it to me." Cheongsan snatches the phone from Isak's hand. I whip my head towards the door and I see our classmate, Yeonju, nose bleeding and finger nails scratching against the door window. Cheongsan holds the phone up to her face, trying for a Face ID. It's no use though as she won't stand still and her face is covered in blood. "It's not working." I sigh loudly, as Cheongsan takes a step closer to the doors.
"We don't need to unlock it to make emergency calls." Onjo points out to Cheongsan and I nod at her. "That's right."
We attempt make calls to the police station but it's clear they won't take us seriously.
"You know you'll get in trouble making these false reports right?" The dispatcher says to us. We desperately try to tell them the situation but they clearly don't care. As we make the calls, we can faintly hear chuckling in the background. The dispatchers taking us as a joke.
