"Good morning.", a voice cut through your mind like a sharp knife cut through flesh.
Blinking, you returned to the present.
"Jinx.", taking a deep breath, you took off the surgical glasses and let the patient rest. "You're back."
She nodded.
"Am I not welcome anymore?"
The guilty look on her face and the way she let her foot draw circles in the dust told you that she was ashamed of what had happened a few days ago.
You had to admit, she might have been a child but the possibility that she was spying for Silco did not seem too unrealistic to you.
It certainly had occurred to you a few times.
But in the end she was a child. Somebody who seemed to be in desperate need of friends. Or at least people that were like her.
No matter how Silco planned on taking care of her, she needed human interaction with other kids to develop properly.
A sigh left your lips as you pet her head.
"Don't worry, Jinxie.", you flashed her a smile, pushing her away from the table that was drenched in blood and violett liquid that was neither pure shimmer nor of human origin. "Pass by as often as you want. Just... don't go into my office anymore. Or near the patients."
A relieved expression lit up her face. She turned around briskly, her badly braided pigtail swirling around her head, when she suddenly paused. With a raised eyebrow and a not-quite-clear shimmer in her eye, she glanced at you.
"What did you call me?", she asked with a mixture of confusion and indignation.
You couldn't help giggling at the sight, and had to put a hand over your mouth to keep her from thinking you were making fun of her.
"Jinxie.", you said, patting her head to tease her. "Jinxie Dinxie."
Disgusted, her mouth fell open while one eyebrow was raised.
In that moment your heart skipped a beat. She looked so much like Silco, you noted but did not dare to speak it out loud.
"That sucks.", she complained. "You should never have kids. I'd feel sorry for them. What do you call them then? Oxie Boxie? Doddie Noodie? Hongie Bongie?"
Rolling your eyes, you pinch her cheek.
She frowned.
You smiled.
"Now go on.", you nodded in the direction of the garden. "I'm sure the others are already waiting for you."
Shrugging her shoulders, she turned away as if she'd already forgotten everything.
You watched her, smiling but with a hint of unease in your body. Your shoulders were stiff only thinking about her being Silco's daughter. Maybe not by blood, clearly not by blood, but she would be by heart and mind at some point. If that case would happen, you had another thing to worry about.
Jinx seemed to be the perfect disguise, a young girl with the most innocent eyes. But the appearance lied, because her skills were impossible to overlook. She was quick on her feet, skilled when it came to climbing without making a single sound. She'd be the perfect spy.
And maybe an even better thieve.
Thinking about it gave you a headache. Squeezing your eyes shut, you groaned and tried to suppress the pain by massaging the bridge of your nose with two fingers.
Usually that helped to ease the stress. But not this time. This time it felt like it was holding onto your mind like nothing else.
It made you restless, forced you to think about every single possibility that could happen or had to be prevented. No matter if Jinx knew what his plan was, he could just manipulate her. He was the drug lord of Zaun, using a child for his goals did not seem like something he wouldn't do.
"Shit...", you mumbled and threw a quick glance towards the hallway that led to your office. "Let's hope she's not in this... And if so I hope the box is safe this time..."
But before you could go insane about it, the feeling of a hand appeared in your shoulder.
Struck by surprise, you flinched, twirled around and pointed the sharp tip of the scalpel at the person.
With her eyes wide open and her hands raised as to show there was not a threat, a woman looked at you. Her chest was raising and falling in a hurry.
She swallowed thickly.
"Samaritan?", she asked, unsure. "Are you alright?"
Sighing, you lowered the scalpel.
"Maria.", you tried to show her an apologetic smile but it seemed more embarrassed. "I'm sorry I didn't... I- my nerves are a bit... worn out today. Worked through the last few nights."
With an eyebrow raised she nodded understanding.
"It's ungrateful work.", she agreed and held a metal plate under your nose. "Like this."
Confused, you frowned, looked at her and demanded an explanation.
The plate was covered in black powder, rusty nails and small shards of glass. At least it seemed to be glass.
"That's... our trash?", you asked.
She shook her head.
"I found it under a bed in section D. Smell it."
Confused, but not wanting to offend her before knowing the details, you bend down and took a few deep breaths.
As the smell hit your nose a shiver crawled down your spine. Disgusted, you pressed a hand onto your mouth.
"Acid.", you mumbled and pulled back. "And blackpowder."
She nodded. The expression on her face was full of worry but also a little bit fearful.
"I don't want to be rude, but has this something to do with his visit?", she asked, now sounding frightened.
Surprised that she knew about it, you tilted your head and eyed her for a moment. Maria had volunteered just a few weeks before Silco's visit.
Of course, that didn't have to mean anything, but in the context of the events of the last few days, you couldn't help but be skeptical.
Maybe you were starting to go crazy, though. Long work days and nights mixed with little sleep could make people paranoid. You were no exception.
Only by looking at her face, it wasn't easy to tell if she was trying to get some infos out of you to spread rumours that couldn't be denied or if she was seriously worried.
"Are there more?", you asked instead of answering.
She nodded, her eyebrows drawn together.
