For a moment, everything was as silent as death. It would have been possible to hear dust grow and leaves fall.

With their breaths held, the bodyguards kept their eyes glued to the back of Maria's head. The tension that was torturing them was written all over their faces.

As she twitched, one of them lost focus and kicked her in the back.

Gasping, she fell to the floor again. Salvia dripped from the corners of her mouths.

With a disgusted look on his face, Silco stepped aside to avoid getting his shoes all dirty. His eyes were glued to her. Every time she moved in the slightest way his black eye twitched and followed the movement.

The reaction to the shimmer was delayed. Her body twisted and turned in pain, she growled and gasped. But nothing changed. There were no shimmering veins, no growth in muscles.

But as she raised her head, her eyes shimmered in a deep violett. With hate covering her face, Maria tore her mouth wide open and screamed.

Struck by surprise, his eyebrows rose. He took a step back.

One of the bodyguards wanted to grab her, but she wrapped her arms around his neck, jerked upwards and broke his neck. The sound made her shiver in excitement.

Without another sound, he dropped to the floor and remained motionless. His eyes were wide open, filled with fear and surprise equally.

Maria growled. The way she moved remained of an animal, hurt but willing to kill if it meant surviving.

Immediately, her eyes fell onto the other man.

Struck by panic, he reached for the gun on his belt.

But shimmer was a weapon as well. A cruel one.

With surprising speed she jumped up, twirled around and dodged the attack. She jumped at him. Her weight mixed with the force of the jump tore him to the ground.

Gasping, he fell and let the gun slip from his grip.

She reached out, usually not a threat when seeing her small statue. But the shimmer made its host cruel gifts.

Physical strength was one of them. With all her might she let her fiat crash down on him.

Holding his breath he managed to grab her waist and throw her away from him.

With a scream, she crashed into the coffee table and smashed the wood underneath her. Her head twitched, for a second, the colour of her eyes changed back to the original brown. Softness appeared on her face.

She was afraid. But in the next moment the shimmer took over again. Rage burned up inside of her.

Maria screamed. It was such a deafening, disgusting sound that it made the glass of the windows tremble.
Watching, Silco pulled his eyebrows together.

His lips moved, while he walked around his table and pulled open a drawer.

The sound made her flinch. Her head jerked to the side, eyes of shimmer looked at him.

With a slow movement, he pulled out a gun.

"What do you think will happen now?", he asked, his voice calm but his heart beating faster than he wanted to admit.

Maria growled. Her head twitched, lips trembling while long strands of salvia were dripping all over her.

It seemed like she wanted to respond, but her tongue wasn't human enough to do so.

He shrugged his shoulders. The gun was dangling from his long, slender fingers.

"This is enough. I've seen what I needed to see.", he checked the ammunition as if there was all the time in the world waiting for him.

Her eyes twitched as the clicking sound of the trigger reached her ears.

Taken by the shimmer's influence she bared her teeth. Her legs moved, positioning themselves in a way that indicated she was about to jump at him as well.

From the corner of his eyes, Silco could spot the remaining bodyguard move.

Giving him a silent command, he stepped into the open, away from the bit of protection that the desk could have given his lower body.

With a scream making her whole body tremble, Maria jerked towards him. But before her outstretched fingers could rip his scarred face apart, the bodyguard jumped in.

With full force he tackled her from the side. Taken by the force the two of them crashed into the wall.

A loud breaking sound filled the room.

Cracks danced through the glass, threatening to shatter the window into a thousand pieces.

Screaming, she dug her nails into his back. Flesh tore open, blood poured out and soaked the fabric of his shirt with a deep red.

Struggling to hold her down, the bodyguard's eyes jumped to Silco.

But the eye of Zaun was busy with looking at the creature that his spy had become. Her body wasn't affected by the drug, he noted. At least not from the outside.

It pleased him to see that the effects were largely inside. That made a spark of hope appear in his eyes. So it had not been a fatal mistake to put his trust into your skills.

If this kind of shimmer would continue to change for the better, he would have a chance to keep his own body in check.

"Very good...", he mumbled, his eyes locked with Maria's. "I must say... I am impressed... and pleased..."

He pulled the trigger.

A shot rang out.

Maria gasped.

Choking, her head snapped back, blood dripped down her cheek, onto her shoulder and down her arm to form a small puddle on the floor.

Not a second passed and the door swung open.

With her eyes filled with tension, Sevika bursted into his office.

"What the fuck happened?!", she asked, her eyes jumping from him to Maria's lifeless body and back. "Why?!"

Throwing the gun on his desk, he shrugged and wiped his hands as if there was dort stuck to them.

"A problem that I had to eliminate.", he said.

"I can tell.", carefully, she steeped closer to take a better look. "Did she turn on us?"

Silco looked up. His eyes were as hard as stone. But there was something shimmering in his black eye.

Admiration.

"Worse.", he said with a pleased undertone in his scratchy voice. "The Samaritan used her."
