"I wouldn't have expected you to take drastic measures like this.", there was a hint of amusement shimmering in his human eye as he leaned back in your chair and blew smoke from his cigar towards the ceiling.
Snapping the lighter shut again, you crossed both arms in front of your chest, one eyebrow raised.
"And I wouldn't have expected you to be such a fucking asshole.", you hissed. "Seriously, the eye of Zaun is said to be a great man."
"So?"
"Great men have standards, Silco. Threatening me? No fucks given. Breaking into my office to steal? I can get behind that. Blowing up a hospital? Fine. But putting kids in danger for your own benefit? Not acceptable. Not even for you."
Drawing his eyebrows together, he frowned and tilted his head.
"I took care of that little issue.", he assure. "I might be a monster, but those kids could still be beneficial to me. Rest assured that they are safe."
You shook your head.
"I'm not talking about my kids. I'm talking about yours."
"Pardon?"
"Jinx."
"She's not-...", he sighed, restraining the anger that was boiling up inside. "I happen to be new to this... parenting business."
It was easy to tell by the sound of his voice that he tried to deal with it. He wasn't used to it yet, but didn't hate the idea of having a little mini terrorist of his own.
The will was there, but his pride and the cold image he had build for himself over the years made it difficult to get into the knew role.
With a sarcastic look on your face, you crossed your arms in front of your chest.
"I can tell. You're terrible at this."
The corner of his scarred mouth twitched. A hissing breath escaped him as he blew another cloud of smoke into the room, in your direction this time.
The touch made your skin itch. Your fingers twitched and wanted to scratch, but you held back and remained unmoved.
He noticed, his black eye twitched. With a gesture of his hand, he stroked through the black hair of his, which was already starting to get grey on the sides and took another deep breath of his cigar.
For a short moment you wondered how he would taste like if he smoked something that smelled this demonic.
Plus, it surprised you that his teeth were still as white as pearls. Judging by his habit they should be as yellow as piss.
"And you will be the judge of that?", he asked, glancing at you from the corner of his eyes while scanning the room. "Does having more kids to deal with give you a better ability to raise them?"
You rolled your eyes. Taking one big step towards him, you placed your feet on a specific plank while making it seem as natural as possible.
After his first break in you had relocated the precious box underneath the floor in a small safe. The office looked messy as hell, which indicated that he had been looking for that one specific box. Or he had the woman named Sevika look for it.
Either way, it would be best if you would keep the location a secret through blocking it from his direct view.
"I don't consider myself any better than you.", you said and eyed his face to check the small reactions. "But I wouldn't use a child to my advantage."
This time, his lips twitched more visibly. A low growl escaped him but he suffocated the sound as quickly as it had come.
"I don't use her."
"You made her place the explosive piles, didn't you?"
"That was Jinx's own idea."
"She's a child. What child has ideas like that?"
"A genius.", the way he said it left no room for doubts, no acceptance for objections. "She's smarter than any other of my men. Smarter than Sevika. She insisted on doing it on her own. And who am I to refuse her success?"
"Success?", struck by surprise yet angered, you raised an eyebrow. "Blowing up a building with people inside is considered success?"
"It's not. But she must learn what it means to make sacrifices. She must learn the consequences of her own actions."
"Bullshit. She's a child."
"She won't be forever."
"That's a problem to worry about in the future. Leave her out of this."
Suddenly, he crunched the cigar in his first. Ash and glowing cinder rained down on the wooden surface and drew small holes onto it.
As he got up from the chair there was a gloomy shadow dancing in his eyes.
The expression on his face told that be was angered. But it was impossible to tell if it was because he got impatient or because you were getting on his nerves.
"Samaritan.", he hissed, the word dripping from his tongue like poison. "It sounds like you need a reminder who Jinx's guardian is."
"Ah.", you gasped with a hint of amusement. "So that's it."
He stopped, vividness confusion in his eyes.
"What?"
"You're feeling attacked in your authority."
An amused huff escaped his thin lips.
"Why would I feel attacked by a joke like you? I'm the eye of Zaun. You're merely an unpleasant abnormality disturbing my plan."
You shook your head, not being able to suppress the slim smile that slowly conquered your face.
"Not as the leader of this hellhole.", you said. "But as a father figure."
Suddenly, he froze. For the first time he seemed overwhelmed, surprised by something he had not calculated.
The emotions were written all over his face, even his infected black eye suddenly seemed so human, so emotional.
His lips moved, but he was unable to form words to defend himself.
"So I'm right...", you mumbled and stepped closer to look him in the eyes in a challenging way. "Let's make a deal, Silco."
"I thought you don't want to work for me."
"I'd rather die. But I am willing to work with you for my own benefit."
For a moment, Silco hesitated.
"I'm listening.", he hissed.
