In the morning we eat the last on the peas and we are down to one jug of water we were so thirsty yesterday it was hard to pay attention to how much we drank till a jug was half gone combined with sweating outside yesterday afternoon in this morning's breakfast we drank a lot even though we both tried to ration it.

Sophia suggests digging for water because we are near a creek. We can't go down to the creek because it is two much effort to get back up. I grab the shovel I look at the pistol "Sophia I think we should take the guns" she looks concerned "we can't use it; and it's not like walkers will get threatened." I nod "but we don't want anyone to take them the big one is too much to carry, the pistol aren't though."

Checking the safety, it's on for both of the guns. I wish I could remember how to check if it is loaded all I can remember is you pull a part back. It's an embarrassment to my dad's lessons about guns. He told me how dangerous of weapons guns are and I can't remember how to check if theses are loaded.

"Hey you ok Jacob?" I look up at Sophia "yeah I'm fine. The safety is on but I don't remember how if it's loaded so we gotta treat like it's loaded. That's one of the big rules dad taught me." Sophia nods "yeah mom taught me too." Nodding at her statement I ask "are you ok with handling one?"

She nods I hand her the gun we both struggle to find a place the gun will fit. I place mine on my hip in between my knife holster strap and jeans. Sophia fits it in the small of her back with her belt. The gun is heavy and weighs down my pants I tightened my belt and the straps to make up for it.

We are walking in the woods not far from the cabin dragging the shovel so it makes line in the dirt to follow back. Down a small hill we find a wet spot to dig. Like the climbing digging is easier on Tv than in real life. It's hard to break the ground I have to stand on the shovel with both feet making me nearly fall it barely makes a cut in the dirt.

After several attempts Sophia puts a hand on the shovel "let me help" I nod we lift the shovel together slamming it down with all our might it goes about a fourth of the way in we both put a foot on the shovel pushing down it goes more into the ground Sophia takes a step back going back to standing guard and I pull the shovel toward the ground a patch comes up. I see that the grass is holding it down.

We repeat the process on the other three sides of the patch that we are trying to dig up. It is hard and tiring for both of us we. I am still hungry making it harder to work my stomach grumbles but I ignore it we have one can of soup left I'm not sure what we will do when we run out of food I haven't seen any berries and even if I did I wouldn't know which ones are poisonous or any other plants are edible. I want to survive but unless we find more food or the group we will - NO I can't think like that I'm not giving up yet Sophia and I will find the group we will live.

After all the work prying the first patch of dirt I'm sweating and exhaustion is threatening to make me unable to hold the shovel. I dump the dirt to the side. Sophia and I look into the hole shaking my head "no water" all that work for nothing I let out a breath leaning against the shovel. Sophia touches the dirt at the bottom of the hole "the dirt is soaked just a little more digging and we will have water. Do you want me to dig now?" I'm tired but I'm not going to give up after one shovel full shake my head " no I got it" she looks unsure but nods. I push the shovel into the bottom of the hole. There is a squelch sound as I pull up the dirt wet mud is left under the dirt. Pushing in to the dirt with the shovel stepping on the shovel with another squelch noise prying the mud up with the shovel. Putting the shovel to the side I squat down looking into the hole there is a pool of water at the bottom I cup the water in my hand it comes up clear.

Sophia gets out the cups and pots we brought I start to reach for the cup but Sophia stops me. "No please let me do it please you dug the hole take a break and watch for walkers please?" I nod "yeah thanks" she smiles scooping water out of the hole pouring it into the pot.
