We did the whole polite greeting thing when I got into the car. Sasha told me where we were going, well actually, not really. She said it was some sort of surprise. She said she wanted to take me some place that meant a lot to her. The gesture would’ve been nice had I not held a strong hatred for surprises.
I kept my mouth shut all the same and offered up a grateful smile as she drove off towards her destination in her rackety car. I’m not being rude either, it genuinely was rackety, it made an unreliable clicking noise every time she pressed down on the accelerator.
We drove for half an hour until we ended up on other side of town. She pulled into the car park of a dodgy looking place and I was back on alert, this didn’t look safe. I cleared my throat and forced a calm tone, “So where are we?”
“The place Drew and I had our first date.” She said simply as she hopped out. “I used to work here.”
Fire burned inside of me. For some reason, I was angry she brought me to the place of their first date. I couldn’t pinpoint the feeling behind the anger but it was something I wasn’t fond of.
I followed her into the restaurant and was hit by the smell of smoke. Not tobacco either, weed. I coughed loudly and didn’t make a point of hiding it. She smiled embarrassedly, “Sorry about that. It’s a chill place, that’s why we like it, the food is amazing too. Don’t worry, just trust me on this one.”
“Sure thing.” I said, trying hard to breathe in through my mouth. “Do you think we could get a table outside? Is that possible?”
Sasha chuckled, “Yeah sure, that’s probably the best idea.”
She led the way through to the back and we came out into a small outside area with an outdoor heater and a few tables. We sat down at one and a waiter was quick to give us menus. Yes, the place actually had waiters. I can’t say I wasn’t surprised.
I ordered an orange juice and a Vegetarian pizza and Sasha got the mushroom ravioli with a coke. When he left, she smiled at me, “So I’m really glad we can hang out without Drew. You’re obviously a big part of his life so I thought it would be great if we got along, not only for his sake but for ours too.”
“Yeah definitely.” I replied half-heartedly, even though I was impressed with the effort she was making.
Our drinks were brought to us and after a long mouthful, she turned to me again, “I know that you’ve had a problem with Drew’s girlfriends in the past but I just want to let you know, that I would never intentionally hurt Drew. I love him and I really am here to stay.” I just nodded because I had a feeling she wasn’t finished. “He makes me happy, like really happy and because of him, I want to be a better person. So I just wanted you to know that I really care for him and I’m hoping we can call a truce.”
She held her hand out for me to shake and I was so weary. So so weary because I couldn’t trust any of Drew’s girlfriends. Every time they did something to screw it up and they left him broken. Then I looked into her eyes and I knew she was sincere. I knew that she meant every word. And even though it hurt to do so from the fire burning deep inside of me, I still shook her hand. A good firm shake. I didn’t let up on a steely look though, “If you hurt him, I will personally hunt you down myself. I’m giving you my trust Sasha because for once I actually tolerate you, you could even go as far as saying I like you but don’t quote me on it. Just … look after him, okay?”
