A week later, Drew told me I should dress nicely for the dinner he had organised. I was finally going to see Wes and Keaton and I was finally going to meet his girlfriend. Sasha was her name. It didn’t say much about her character, I mean, Drew’s last girlfriend was called Blaze. It was a nickname and it said a lot about her character. I didn’t know what he meant when he said nice. I knew we had two completely different definitions. My sloppy was his idea of nice. I didn’t dress sloppy in public. Ever. There were images to maintain. I was majoring in Law a NYU and if you want to be the best, you have to look the best. That was the first thing I learnt when I got there and I’ve held it in my mind ever since. Therefore, when it came time to get ready, I picked out a simple black dress with a high neck and plain black pumps. Nothing fancy yet nothing sloppy. I added a bit of colour to make myself less daunting by wearing a red and gold necklace. I kept my make-up neutral and gave my hair a light curl.
When I arrived at ‘Jerry’s’ – the place Drew had directed me too – I wasn’t surprised to find it was more of a pub than a restaurant. I constantly had to tug my dress down while I was walking to the front door because creepy men kept eyeing me up. I knew from the get go this was a bad idea; this was the most run down part of Huntington Beach. Inside wasn’t much better, it was hot and stuffy and I immediately felt uncomfortable. I spotted Drew sitting over in the back corner so I moaned to him when I was within hearing distance, “Why would you even think about bringing me here Drew?”
He laughed at me, “Well, Princess Kitty has arrived.”
“It’s Princess Kaitlin to you.” I spat sarcastically back.
There was no girl with him so I couldn’t make any first judgments. I did see Wes however and he was quick to jump up and give me a hug. I’d met him after I’d become friends with Drew. Considering they lived together, it was hard not to make friends with him. As far as I was concerned, he was just as bad as Drew in the personality area. Wes said something snarky to me so I was quick to shove him off. I let myself smile at Keaton; he hadn’t changed at all since I’d last seen him. He was still as dorky as ever. I gave him a tender hug and asked him about school. I’d taken on a big sister roll with him seeing as his own sister lived upstate. I kept him on track and made sure he stayed focused at school. It helped Laraine a lot since she was working all the time but I didn’t mind, I’d always wondered what it would’ve been like to have a younger sibling.
I was talking to Keaton about school when Drew jumped up. I looked curiously over at him just in time to see him put his hand around a girl’s waist. I was careful to take her all in. The first thing I noticed was her red hair. It was obviously dyed and definitely fake looking. She was pretty, like, gorgeous actually. It was just the red hair that gave her the tacky finish. I put my hand out politely for her to shake, “It’s nice to meet you. You must be Sasha. I’m Kaitlin.”
“It’s nice to meet you too." She shook my hand. It was a soft handshake. I noticed that she had chipped nail polish. I also noticed she was scared. The look she gave me was a hesitant smile.
I forced myself to give her a warm smile of my own. It let her relax. I saw it in her posture; her shoulders slumped indicating she had stopped tensing nervously. The benefit of studying Law was that we did a section on body behaviour; I was able to pick up a lot about a person just by looking at them. It gave me the upper hand.
We sat down at the table and menus were handed to us. Everything on the menu sounded greasy and fattening and not something, I would've eaten willingly. When the waiter came around to take our orders, I peered at him curiously, "Uh ... Do you have like, a salad or something?"
