Chapter Six

II just realised after reading the previous chapter that I really fucking like my Drew story. Man I’m good. Anyway, I’m super sorry for not updating this story at like all but I’ve been focusing on my other two before I finish this off. I just want y’all to remember that this story is a short. I doubt it’ll get past twenty chapters maybe not even close. I just want you to remember that. Thank you and enjoy! Xoxox

It's short but I did this really quickly cos I didn't plan on writing anything for this story. Yeah

I didn’t go see Drew for a number of days. I needed to sift through all the jumbled thoughts in my head. I needed to step back and really assess what I was doing for Drew and where I stood with him. As much as I didn’t want to admit it, my argument with Sasha pulled up a few points that hit close to home. She was right, I did control Drew and it wasn’t right. At first I thought it was because I was doing what was best for him but I know I wasn’t too sure. Maybe at the back of mind I was trying to conform him … trying to change him into something that better suited my lifestyle.

I was sitting on the edge of the pool, my feet in the water, reading some Sylvia Plath when someone approached me from behind. I didn’t have to turn to see it was Drew. I was expecting him anyway. I hadn’t spoken to him for a few days and I knew he’d be worried.

He dropped down next to me and slipped his own feet into the water. “You’ve been quiet for the past couple days.”

I shrugged and we sat in silence for a while. I turned the page of my book even though I wasn’t really reading, I was too aware of his presence. I didn’t know if Sasha had told him about our dinner and I was anxious to see what he’d say. But not yet, no. Right now I wanted to ask some different questions. I put my book down and turned slightly to face him. “Hey Drew?”

“Yeah?”

I paused, unsure of how to word my next question. “Do you think I try to change you Drew?”

“Of course you do Kitty,” he chuckled. “But I don’t listen. It just goes in through one ear and out the other.”

I shook my head. “No … not like that. Do you think I try to, you know, control you?”

His smile dropped and a small crease line formed between his eyebrows. I just wanted to reach forward and rub it away. Drew doesn’t suit frowning, not at all. “What do you mean?”

“Like, do you think I try to change you into something you’re not for personal gain.”

“Personal gain?” He scoffed. “What the hell do you mean by that?”

“Do you think I try to change you into something that is more suited to my lifestyle?” I breathed out.

He hesitated and his eyes roamed all over me, as if trying to find the hidden meaning behind my question. He grabbed my shoulders and looked straight into my eyes. The crease was still there. “Listen to me Kit, you try to change me because I get off track, if you didn’t try to change me I would be on the side of the street with no home or money preaching about Ghandi. You try to change me to save me from myself.”

I looked at him in awe. My voice was barely a whisper. “Well if you put it that way …”

He dropped my shoulders and went back to looking at the water. “That’s exactly how I put it. Where is this coming from anyway?”

“Nowhere,” I covered up quickly. There was another silence before I built up the courage for my next question. “Hey Drew?”

“Yeah?”

“If it came down to it … who would you choose? Me or Sasha?”

There was a long pause and my insides churned. That was never good. He played the hem of his t-shirt, ever meeting my eyes. “I’m not going to answer that question because I won’t ever have to choose, okay?”

“But-“

He cut me off. “No buts, alright? Don’t ever ask me that question, better yet, don’t even think about that question because I have no freaking idea who I would choose.”

“Okay,” I said softly. Drew only got worked up about things he was touchy about and that was obviously one of them so I dropped it.

There was another period of no talking and I was just about to pick up my book when Drew spoke. “Sasha won’t tell me,” he started off, “about your dinner a few days ago. She said it was great but I know she’s lying. What really happened, Kitty?”

I waited for a while to try and gather my thoughts. Drew and I had always been honest with each other, always. But I wasn’t sure if I wanted to tell him about the dinner because I wasn’t sure how it would go down. I wasn’t one to sugar coat things and I wasn’t one to tell a story so that I’m in the better light. I tell it like it is and that’s something Drew knows about me so he was counting on me to give him the proper story. I took a deep breath and told him everything. From beginning to end.

When I finished, he sat there wordlessly and stared down at his hands. I held my breath, unsure of how he was going to react. I felt better telling him everything, letting him know what was going on. Both me and Sasha had some bad points in that argument so I was curious to see how he was going to react.

The silence dragged on for longer than necessary so I opened my mouth to stay something but before any words could come out, he said, “I think you’ve said enough for one day.”

It was so quiet yet so powerful it hit me hard. I stared at him incredulously. “Tell me what you’re thinking.”

He stood up abruptly making me mirror his move in a scattered and scared way. He glowered at me. “I’m thinking that Sasha loves me, like, a lot. And I’m thinking that judging by what you’ve said she’s here to stay and I’m ecstatic about that. But I’m also thinking that you could ruin it for me. I get you’re protective Kaitlin, I get it but I’m a big boy and I can handle some things on my own. You’re trying to scare her away and one day it might just work and if it did,” he paused and looked me dead in the eye, “if you managed to scare her away, I don’t think I’d ever forgive you.”

His words hit me like a slap to the face. I searched his face to see if he was joking or not. He wasn’t. He even used my proper name so I know he was being serious .Of course, he only saw that part of the argument, the part where I was the bad person so I let him be. Anything I would’ve tried to say or do would’ve been thrown back in my face. I stayed silent, this would pass, in a few more days Drew would be back and happy, today’s events forgotten. He was good like that.

“I’m sorry,” was all I said.

He shook his head. “No you’re not. You always scare my girlfriends away. Half of the reason they leave me is because of you Kaitlin and I’m sick of it. You think you’re doing me a favour but you’re not. You’re the reason girls leave me. You’re the reason my heart gets broken and I’m done with it. Stay away from Sasha and stay away from me.”

Okay, so maybe staying silent isn’t the best option after all. “Are you serious?” I snapped at him as he tried to walk past me. “You’re really saying this to me right now? All the girls that have walked into your life have been stupid and I’ve done nothing but protect you. You’re really gonna throw this back in my face? Make it out like I’m the complete bad guy? Like Sasha didn’t say some bad things to me? I told you like it is and you picked her side. Before you said, you couldn’t choose but it’s so bloody obvious that you have. I’m done Drew. This time, I’m out."

"That's it then? This the end?" he spat out.

"I guess so." I matched his tone.

"Fine. Goodbye Kaitlin."

"Yeah, bye Drew."

And with that, I turned around and left him standing there.
