"Hi there."
For a minute I thought that I was hallucinating.
My eyes took time to adjust to the darkness in the room but even without proper lighting, I would know that face anywhere.
That voice too.
"Roman?" I asked, my voice was scratchy, like I had been screaming too much.
I saw his lips move into a smile. "It's good to see you again, Crystal."
I quickly sat up, immediately flinching when I did, there was a faint ache in my chest.
"You okay?" Roman asked, leaning forward and touching my face in concern.
"Yeah..." I didn't mind the pain, afterall, it paled in comparison to the gut wrenching explosiveness that it had been during the actual moment of the rejection.
I was just mesmorized by the person sitting in front of me. It felt too unreal, like he was a ghost or a figment of my imagination. This didn't feel real.
"Roman, where did you come from?"
I looked around, I was back in Kat's and my room. I don't know how I had gotten here. Infact, I couldn't remember a thing from after everthing went black.
But this still didn't make sense.
Roman couldn't be here so why - how was he here?
He took his hand off my cheek and smiled weakly. "I told you I would take care of it."
He took my hands in his and got up. "Come on."
I was so dazed that I complied without thinking about it. I felt the fabric of my gown drop as I put my feet on the ground.
The rejection... Tristan telling me he didn't need me for the plan... the ball...
How was this all happening?
My head felt like it was spinning."Roman, wait." I spoke, coming to my senses.
He turned to look at me. "Listen, Crystal, we don't have time, I promise I'll explain later but for now, we need to go." He spoke in a low voice.
"Wait." I held on to his hand. "How did you get in? W-where's everyone?"
I could see creases form on Roman's forehead as he frowned.
"You mean the little group Tristan assigned to capture me?" He asked bitterly. "I would say they're... preoccupied." He laughed a humourless laugh.
I froze. "How did you-"
"It's okay. I don't hold it against you." He spoke softly to me rubbing my arm.
"Roman." I clung to his arm as if I was afraid this was indeed a dream. Like he might disappear.
"What - what's going on?" I asked.
Roman suddenly put his hand on my mouth.
"You might wanna keep it down." He spoke in a low voice nodding towards the window.
I pushed back from him and slowly walked to the window. I stood at the side before peeking outside. There were about half a dozen guys moving around wearing the pack army uniforms.
I turned to look back at Roman.
"Looks like the alpha isn't taking any chances with his luna, huh?" I could hear the sarcasm in his voice.
"You don't know the whole story." I told him in a level voice refusing to feel ashamed like I had cheated or lied.
"Doesn''t matter. We don't have time for this right now." His voice became a bit more impatient.
