Chapter 10

I feel my heart beating in my chest when I turn around. A boy, slightly smaller than I am, is standing behind me. He has curly, darkbrown hair, big brown eyes and he looks about 12 years old.

"Who are you?" he repeats. He looks at me and pulls his hand away. "You're not a Dauntless. Who are you?"

I close my eyes for a second. "Do you know Will? He's a transfer," I say, trying to avoid his question. He frowns a little. "I asked you who you were. And you aren't Will, are you?"

I sigh and try to avoid his eyes. After a few seconds he walks a few steps away from me, toward a door I hadn't noticed before.

"Lynn!" he shouts, banging on the door.

In a reflex I step toward him and pull him away from the door. "What are you doing?" I siss.

He ignores my question and shouts again. "Lynn, open the door!"

The door opens and a grumpy-looking girl with a shaved head, about sixteen years old, steps outside, reaching for the boy's wrist. "Hec, be silent! No one is supposed to know I'm here!" She says angrily, not even noticing me.

"Yes, I know that," he scowls and pulls his wrist free. "Here," he says, pulling me forward. "I found her in the hallway," he says, as if I'm an object he has found and now owns, "and she's asking for one of the transfers. She won't tell me her name."

Lynn's eyes shift to me and she scowls. "Who are you?" she asks, scowling at me. "You're not a Dauntless, you're not supposed to be here."

I swallow and look at the wall behind her, which is a dull grey with a blue glow. "I-", but I don't know what to say. I don't know if they're to be trusted or not. But the way she just acted; she must have some kind of secret of her own. So she probably isn't that close with the leaders of this faction, which means it's probably worth a shot.

Lynn squints her eyes at me. "Yes?"

"I- I came to warn you." I eventually bring out, swallowing the lump in my throat.

My feet feel heavy while I try to shuffle backwards when she stares at me for a couple of seconds and then bursts out in laughter. "To warn us? The Dauntless don't need warnings. You are probably the one who needs a warning: you are not supposed to be here!" she laughs.

I feel my breath become heavier, and my palms become sweaty. "Please, just.. just listen to me. Just for a minute." I say so softly, I almost whisper it.

The girl rolls her eyes and sighs heavily. "Okay, tell me what you want to tell me and then please shut up. I was sleeping."

Quietly I tell her a shortened version of Jeanine's plan, but I leave my brother's participation out of it. It might make here even more suspicious of me.

When I'm done Lynn stares at me blankly. "Why would they do that? How do I even know you speak the truth? I don't believe it."

I stare at here, unbelievably. Does she really think I would come all the way here, just to tell her nonsense? I have made sacrifices. I had to leave Erudite, the place where I was supposed to build a home, and won't be able to go back. And Jane... It's my fault Jane came along on this trip; it's my fault she died. I won't repay her dead by failing this mission.

I look confidently up into her dark brown eyes -they're a nice kind of brown, like dark chocolate-, but when I'm about to defend myself, Hector speaks up. "Why would she come down here and risk her own life to warn us for something that isn't even true? That wouldn't make any sense!"

"Hec, please shut up for once. You don't understand." She snaps. "She," her eyes pierce into mine "could be a spy from an old... enemy... of us. She could be trying to trick us."

I have no idea what she's talking about, but I hear Hector inhale sharply - apparently he does know what Lynn means.

"No." His steady voice says suddenly and I look up surprisedly. "I don't believe that. She must be right. Jeanine has been here more often recently, and yeah, just in general, there are suddenly so many people in blue clothing here. This can't be a coincidence - it can't be!"

Lynn looks angrily over at her brother. "Hec, shut up, she- she's, she must be..." her voice trails off; there's a hint of doubt in her voice.

"Just let me talk to Will. Please. I won't bother you again," I plead and from the corner of my eye I see Hector nodding.

"Shut up, Hector! You're too young! You don't understand anything of this!" Lynn nearly shouts. Hector looks like he wants to attack his sister, but knows he won't stand a chance. Instead he basically runs past her, through the door, and slams the door shut. "Maybe you should try to understand others, instead of always- always thinking about yourself," he shouts back and then goes silent.

Lynn looks like she's about to explode, but her voice sounds dangerously calm. "I'll show you the transfers dorm. Then you're on your own."

She bumps into my shoulder and walks rapidly down the hallway. After a few seconds of hesitating I follow her and try not to look too much like an Erudite- or Abnegation. Divergent. Whatever I am.

I try to look confident and Dauntless, which isn't easy when you're raised as an Abnegation. Almost impossible. I wonder what would've happened if I hadn't chosen the wrong faction - what would have happened if I actually had chosen Dauntless, or had stayed in Abnegation. I would probably be sleeping, instead of following a rude, grumpy girl who looks like she has spent too many days in the training room.

I don't recognize anything in the compound from what Cara descriped to me. What if Lynn leads me somewhere entirely else? Or worse - what if she actually drops me off in the middle of the transfer dorm without introducing me or saying anything else about me and leaves me, standing there alone? What would I do?

I see Lynn stopping in front of me and pointing at an old-looking wooden door in the middle off an uneven wall made of stone. "Go in there," she says, "and find what you want to find." And after those words she walks away, leaving me alone in an empty hallway where I can hear water dripping along the walls. It probably comes from the chasm Cara told me about.

But then I realize something else Cara said - the transfers dorm is supposed to be above the Chasm and not beneath it.

I turn around and around again. I feel like I'm becoming paranoid; I can hear the sound of the water getting louder and louder - it's rushing in my ears.

This can't be right: Lynn must indeed have lead me somewhere entirely different than where she said she would. Who knows what's inside that door; it could be anything.

I slowely start to back up, setting small steps backwards, faster and faster, until I turn around and start running.

The sound of my feet clattering against the ground makes me cringe and I look back over my shoulder, suspiciously. That was my mistake.

I feel my body collide against another body and my head hits the ground. Hard.

I touch my head, but there doesn't seem to be any blood. But it hurts so much. So. Much. Black spots appear in my vision and for a second I'm afraid I'll black out, but the spots leave as quickly as they came and when I can see clearly again, I'm looking into two brown, worried eyes.

A hand touches my shoulder. "Are you okay?" her soft voice asks me.

I try to nod my head, but it makes it only hurt more.

"Come on, I'll take you to the tattoo parlor and give you some tea. I believe we have met before, and... I believe that you're not supposed to be here."
