Hey ya'll
I wanted to take a quick break and address some current events that are happening.
Fist off, I hope that anyone still in Ukraine is able to make it out safely. Whatever Putin has against Ukraine it was not big enough to go to war. I can't even believe something like this is happening on top of everything that has happened these past 2-3 years. I'm sending my love and support for anyone reading this who is from Ukraine or has family or friends from Ukraine. I hope this war ends soon and I hope that Ukraine can built back what it has lost.
So many innocent lives have already been slaughtered. So many building have already been burned. So many families have already been torn apart. And only more is to come. I hope that wherever you are, that you could help in any way, shape, or form to support Ukraine as it is going through this disastrous time.
My second announcement is that I just found out that House Rep. Joe Harding's (R) "Don't say gay" bill has passed the final Senate committee and is now moving to Senate floor for a vote. The bill says that LGBTQ+ topics regarding sexual orientation and gender expression are not to be discussed in grades 3rd or below, or what the state thought was fit. They say it's deemed "inappropriate" and "not developmentally appropriate" for students.
State Sen. Dennis Baxley (R) said this: "I am really amazed at how something so simple turned into this," then adds that the bill's anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment has been "fabricated by the media." He also goes on to say this: "This does one simple thing – it decides who's in charge," he said. "I'm not trying to demonize anybody, I'm not trying to negate the values of teachers. I'm just trying to come back to center point. Parents must be in charge of these decisions."
Later, the House tried to pass an amendment would allow parents to sue a teacher if they were talking about lgbtq+ topics in their classroom. Among that, there was another amendment that also implicated that teachers had the right to out a student (without student consent) to their parent(s) or guardian if the student didn't out themselves in six weeks of the teacher finding out. Luckily, they got shot down.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said this: "We've seen instances of students being told by different folks in school, 'Oh, don't worry. Don't pick your gender yet. Do all this other stuff.' They won't tell the parents about these discussions that are happening," DeSantis said. "That is entirely inappropriate. Schools need to be teaching kids to read, to write. They need to teach them science, history. We need more civics."
This is so harmful to the LGBTQ+ community and they're just brushing it off. I feel deeply sorry for anyone who lives in Florida who is LGBTQ+ I can't imagine what it would be like if that bill became official. For anyone in Florida, please stay safe. I hope that this bill gets shot down and that our country won't have to deal with it, but it's being approved at a concerning rate.
And to the rest of you, please show your support for these two issues in any way you can. Our world is tearing each other apart because of ideologies.
Our existence should not be up for debate. It should not have regulations and restrictions. This is messed up in so many ways.
You are loved, each and every one of you. The law should never make people hide for who they are. Once again, please be careful, all of you. I hope that things will turn around soon.
