Lizzy sits down in her Intro to Engineering class. A blonde girl sits down next to her, "hi," the girl says. "My name is Annabeth."
"Elizabeth, but everyone calls me Lizzy." They talk for a few minutes until the professor comes in and starts class.
Over the next few months as Lizzy and Annabeth become closer Lizzy starts noticing some weird things about Annabeth.
One day she is hanging out in Annabeth's dorm when Lizzy sees some blueprints on the desk, they look like some sort of cabin or something.
"What are these for?"
Annabeth looks up from her book, "oh, my mom wants to build a family cabin and asked me to help design it."
"That's so cool!"
"Yeah," Annabeth says, but she doesn't seem too excited about it.
Another time they were sitting in their History class when the professor asks about where they were when Mount St. Helen erupted the second time.
"I was at the store with my mother's mom in L.A.," Lizzy says.
"What about you, Annabeth?" The professor asks.
"I was on the mountain," Annabeth says like it's no big deal.
"What?" Lizzy says.
"Were you?" The professor asks, amazed.
Annabeth nods, "I was with my boyfriend and a few friends, we were on a camping trip. My friend's dad brought us, he has a house not far from there. Anyway, we were climbing the mountain when it happened. My boyfriend had gone ahead to see how far from the top we were while the rest of us stayed back to rest. Then the explosion happened. We all started freaking out and ran down the mountain. My boyfriend was missing for like two weeks after. He came back and crashed his funeral." She smiles.
"Oh my," the professor says. "Is your boyfriend okay?"
Annabeth nods, "yeah, he hit his head and was a little confused, but got away without any major burns or anything."
Another time Annabeth walked into Lizzy's room on her phone. "Whatever," she was saying. "Just make sure they stay dead. I don't want to have to deal with them again in a week. Also, send me the new campers' files as soon as you can, and I'll look over them. I want to know how many campers we have before May. Okay, love you, bye." She hangs up and looks at Lizzy, "sorry that was my boyfriend. We volunteer at a summer camp and this year we are co-directors."
"Wow," Lizzy says, not sure that's the only thing the call was about after the whole staying dead thing. "That sounds fun."
"Yeah," Annabeth agrees. "It's a lot of work, but it's great."
A few days later Lizzy opens the door to Annabeth's room, she is sitting at her desk with her back to the door. Lizzy is about to say hi when she sees Annabeth's arm, it's covered in blood. "Oh my god!" She says. "Annabeth are you okay?"
Annabeth turns and looks at her, "yeah, I'm fine. Why?" She eats a piece of candy that was sitting on the desk.
"Your arm is covered in blood."
Annabeth looks down, "no it's not."
Lizzy looks again and the blood is gone; her arm is completely fine. "How - I swear it was covered in blood a minute ago!"
Annabeth shakes her head, "you must have seen wrong. Anyway, ready to work on our homework?"
Another time they are walking to class and Annabeth's phone rings. She looks at it.
"Do you need to answer it?" Lizzy asks.
Annabeth shakes her head, "it's just one of my friends from back home, I'll call her back later."
They walk into class and sit down. Annabeth's phone rings again. "You sure you don't need to answer that?" Lizzy asks. "It might be important."
Annabeth looks conflicted, "it's might be, but it's Piper, she likes to call me until I pick up. I'm sure it's nothing."
However, about halfway through class Lizzy looks over to see Annabeth typing quickly. "Are you okay?" She whispers.
Annabeth just shakes her head, "my boyfriend is hurt. I have to go, but I can't leave in the middle of class. I have to figure out how I'm going to get back to New York. I don't know how long I'll be gone, so I have to figure out how and if I can make up the work I'm going to miss." Her phone buzzes with a new text, and she looks at it quickly, "oh my gods," she mumbles under her breath. She looks up at the professor then to the clock. She turns to Lizzy, "it's bad. I have to go right now. Feed my fish?"
Lizzy nods, "text me or call me as soon as you can. Let me know if you need anything."
Annabeth nods, as she puts her notebook and laptop in her bag and stands up.
"Where are you going, Ms. Chase? Class isn't over for another hour," the professor says as she walks to the door.
"My boyfriend was just in a car crash and is dying, so I have to go see him." She walks out of the room and slams the door behind her.
A few weeks later Annabeth comes back and tells Lizzy that her boyfriend is fine. Then, she says something about stupid Hellhounds in the middle of the road, but Lizzy is sure she heard her wrong.
