I woke up with a start and practically leapt off onto the floor. I was hyper-alert and scared that something might come out of nowhere to attack me. I held up my hands in a lousy attempt of a self-defence posture with short panicky breathes. my eyes darted around the room to find myself alone in Abuela Alma's room.
My eyebrows met at the centre of my forehead for a moment of thinking. the memories before I blacked out rushed past me and I managed to grab a snippet of what went down.
Who was that woman? I thought to myself and questioned more about the visions I saw. What were they? Why did she call me Mariposa? I contemplated a while over the whole ordeal but it was cut short by Abuela who opened the door with a confused and surprised look dominating her features when she saw me embarrassing myself. I didn't know what to do but blush and stare back.
Tio Diego was on her tail and quickly came to save me from further humiliating myself. "Ay Mija, why are you standing? Come, take a seat." He dragged me back to sit on the bed. Abuela only smiled and shooked her head at my antic.
He then began to inspect me back to front as if searching for anything that's gone out of place. "Tio... I feel fine..." I whined and tried to push his hands away but he only smacked it before giving and giving me a tight hug, making me giggle at his affection.
"You gave us a scare y/n," Abuela said with a long sigh. I nodded solemnly and took her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
"I'm sorry Abuela." I smile at her. "But I'm alright now. though I believe there are some things we should discuss of this matter and I'm also sure you have something important to tell me." I gestured to my family book resting on the nightstand by the bed and Tio carefully place it on his lap.
Abuela moved gracefully towards the door and after a moment the faint click indicated she had locked the door. I watched as she rummaged through her closet to reveal a small square wooden box. "Years ago, before your mother left The Encanto, she left me to guard this." I could hear the sad tone in her voice as she sat beside me and handed me the box. Tio Diego gasped when he saw it.
"I thought it was lost." He exclaimed mostly to himself just above a whisper but I caught it.
It was no bigger than my hand but the refined markings around the box intrigued me. They were nothing like I'd seen before yet seemed familiar in the least. I gingerly lifted the lid to see a pink teardrop-shaped gemstone attached to a string of shiny silver thread that gleamed in the light. I lifted it gently with two hands, afraid that it would break in my hands. I slowly turned it to inspect it and found my family's mark swirling inside as if alive. It was entrancing to watch the butterflies burst into a fine dust when touching each other before reforming and fluttering about, repeating the process over again.
"This is a special stone that has been passed down our family for many generations. It's a relic to help control excess magic." Tio said with admiration as Abuela took the necklace from me.
"It was last worn by your mother." She hummed happily. "Now, it's yours. Take good care of it." She helped put the necklace around my neck and I immediately felt as if tension around my body leave my body. the once pink gem turned f/c.
"Wow." I subconsciously held onto the gem to look at it. "Why did it change colour?" I asked no one in particular.
"That's your magic." I nodded understandingly at Tio's words. "Now, let me tell you about our family." Tio opened the family book and blew on the pages. I became amazed to see green magic dust swirl in the air from the book and form the story being told.
