Peter Parker has never felt more nervous in his entire life. His fate draws closer and closer, pacing between the rows of desks as if it can sense his fear. This has to go well; he doesn't know what he's going to do if it doesn't. Too late for thinking, though- it's over, it's here. Peter sends a silent prayer to whoever's listening that this will at least happen quickly.
The math quiz slams onto Peter's desk with a limp thud. It's been turned over so no one can see the grade, which isn't a good sign. On the other hand, it has not been handed back folded in half around a teacher's accusatory glare, so at least he's got that going for him. The only thing to do now is to check.
With the air of someone examining radioactive remnants of a nuclear bomb, Peter tentatively flips over the quiz. Instantly, he feels a relief crest over him at the sight of the '95' emblazoned in red ink on the front. That actually might save him.
Peter can't help but glance up at the front of the room, at a girl sitting a few rows in front of him. She's just received her quiz, too, although Peter can't see what she got from here.
Within moments, the girl turns back to Peter, just as eager to see how this plays out as he is. Peter casually holds up the quiz, baring the scarlet 95 for her to see. He's expecting a frustrated groan, or maybe even the triumphant smirk of someone who's managed to beat him, but instead the girl just laughs and holds up her own 95. They've tied. Again.
Peter doesn't know how to think about Y/N L/N. He's not even sure when their little grades-based rivalry began, but it's as strong as any other form of armed conflict. She's like the Anne Shirley to his Gilbert Blythe, only in the first book of course, except Peter has absolutely no intention of ever liking Y/N. Ever.
He was hoping he'd be able to eke out a win this morning, but it looks like that won't be the case. A shame, but at least he's got science later today, and he's usually better at that. The amount of time he's spent trying to codify his web fluid has certainly helped for that.
Y/N appears to be feeling similarly, because she catches up to him after class. "Feeling disappointed?"
Peter shrugs. "I don't know what you're talking about. A 95 is a fantastic score."
Y/N rolls her eyes. "I'm talking about the fact that you couldn't beat me. Guess I'm just too good."
Peter can't help but laugh. "As I recall, you couldn't beat me either. Guess it's me who's really just that good."
Y/N sighs dramatically. "Whatever you want to tell yourself, Peter. We all know the truth."
Peter arches a brow. "Which is?"
Y/N smirks, as if hoping that he'd ask that question. "That I'm way better than you, obviously. It's a pity you're still in denial."
Y/N turns down a hallway to her next class, pausing briefly to wave a cheery goodbye to him before she goes as if they're the best of friends. They're not, of course. Peter could only ever think of her as a rival. Definitely not anything else.
Besides, he doesn't have time to think about Y/N L/N in any great or considerable detail, and especially not to come to terms with the fact that his feelings for her may have shifted in the past couple months. Over the last weeks of Spider-Man patrols, Peter keeps noticing something strange, and he needs to figure it out fast before something happens.
