Skatepark Surprises

Peter Parker has never felt so happy to see the familiar concrete of the skatepark. The last few days have been rough, thanks to his typical nightly patrols as Spider-Man. Peter's dead tired and nearly fell asleep five times during school today, but this? He can do this.

Peter slings his backpack near the fence with the others and grins to himself. How long has it been since he's had enough free time to come out here? He can't even remember. There's just something about the bite of the wind against his cheeks, the familiar sound of wheels underneath his feet, that makes him remember why he's been practically killing himself over school and patrols this whole time: so he can live as freely as this, even if it's just for a few hours.

For the first five minutes or so, Peter doesn't think about anything at all. He'd close his eyes if he wasn't worried about the few other people at the skatepark wondering how he's able to nail half-pipes and airborne jumps off of handrails without even having to look. Sure, he could probably do it all with ease thanks to his spider senses (and he can, he's tried it before), but Peter doesn't need people asking questions and figuring out that there's something strange about him.

Peter's already stuck with too many inquisitive people, anyways. One of these days, he's going to slip up and reveal himself, and there's nothing he can do about it except wait. Aunt May suspects something, Peter's sure of it, and there are a few too many kids at his school that have noticed he's been acting differently ever since that one time he showed up at Oscorp. Every time Peter puts on the mask and heads out after dark to fight crime, he's sure he's going to get caught. The feeling just hangs over him like a blade, ready to fall at a moment's notice.

However, all this worrying still isn't enough to convince Peter to stop patrolling. There's just something good about it, something that makes him feel like he's doing his part for the city. Even if a few news anchors and businessmen think that the mysterious Spider-Man is treading too far into vigilantism, the facts are that Peter's able to get through a lot more in the crime solving department without having to tread cautiously around a lot of bureaucratic red tape.

Besides, he's not dead yet, so he might as well live a little longer in the meantime. That's why Peter was able to push aside work and school for a precious span of a few hours and devote that time to the skatepark, so he can have some time to himself for once. He'll keep up in school, he always does, and Peter's managed to get himself out of deadly scrapes as Spider-Man on more than a few occasions. Right now, he can relax, and the best way to do that is to take loop after loop on his skateboard.

Peter comes to a stop at the top of a vert ramp, taking advantage of the high space to catch his breath. He's back far enough from the ramp that the rest of the skateboarders can do their flips and runs without hitting him, but Peter still has a pretty good view nonetheless. Something almost like a contented smile flickers onto his face as he looks out over the skatepark beneath him. He doesn't think he's felt this good in, well, he can't quite remember.

Then he hears it- the rush of wheels up the ramp, indicating that yet another skateboarder is heading up the side of the vert ramp towards him. Peter takes a half step back out of reflex, but he almost wishes he didn't move: when the skateboarder makes it up to the top of the ramp, Peter can finally see her face, and what a face it is.

She hangs there for a moment, as if suspended in the air. If gravity can't even contain her, Peter's not sure how good of a chance he has at convincing her to stay with him himself, but man, he wants to try it nonetheless. There's a fierce light in her eyes as she turns midair, a rush of adrenaline and fervor that Peter's seen on himself enough times to recognize its strength. Her gaze meets his and she starts to grin; evidently, he's staring a little too much.
