May 27th, 1962I was eating breakfast when Scotty walked in.
I watched Karen turn around happily.
"Well?" She said gesturing to Scotty asking dad to play catch.
"He's too busy, Mom." Scotty said.
"Oh no honey, he's not. He has some time." She said. "You go on back out there and ask him."
I watched him disappear around the corner. I heard muffled bits of the conversation. Long story short, he went outside with Dad. I finished my breakfast while they were outside. I took one last look at them and headed to my room.
I didn't get to close the door when I heard a wail from Scotty. I ran out of the room to hear Scotty's ow's with dad pushing him in. Scotty sat in the chair with Dad reaching for the freezer. I knew what he was doing. One time my uncle, who was like 18, was teaching me to wrestle right? Well, he sorta kneed me in the eye a little too hard.
"Honey, get some ice!" Karen said.
"No, I got it." He said unfolding the paper. "Here you go." He said reaching.
"Aw, that was for dinner." She groaned. Dad put the meat on Scotty's eye. They rambled on about the eye and all of that. I'm glad that was Dad and not me.
I was plucking the strings of guitar trying to learn. I only knew how to play happy birthday, but at least it was something. I heard what sounded like talking outside. I looked out my curtain to see Benny tossing Scotty a glove.
"Aw." I said outloud. Scotty disappeared and I went away from the window. I about hit the D string when Scotty burst in my room.
"What?" I said confused.
"Benny wants you to play with us. He invited me and you to the sandlot!" Scotty said excited.
"Really?" I said just as excited.
"Yeah, hurry grab your glove!" He said rushing out. I grabbed my glove hearing Scotty yell something to his mom. I came out of the screen door to see Benny smiling.
"Hey." He said.
"Hey." I responded.
"Are you two ready?" We both nodded. "Cmon." He said jogging away. We both followed. What's these guys deals with running everywhere.
We all walked out the store to see the whole group of guys. The catcher was standing there with a fake cigar in his mouth. He was saying something muffled.
He repeated it a second time and I heard "the great.." He took it out of his mouth defeated.
"I'm the Great Bambino!" He said. All the boys erupted in 'oh's.
"Who's that?" Scotty said. I looked at him trying to see if he was serious. Even I know who he was, and I don't pay attention to sports. All the guys stood up failing to look menacing.
"What did he say?" The catcher said.
"What we're you born in a barn man?" Bertram said.
"Yeah-yeah what planet are you from?" One shorter one said.
"You never heard of the Sultan of Swat?" Four eyes said.
"The titan of terror?" The one with a red and white ball cap said.
"The Colossus of Clout?" One said.
"The Colossus of Clout?" The mini one repeated.
"The King of Crash, man." Benny said.
