June 1st, 1962We had played baseball for a few days with them. It was nice being able to play and crack jokes with people.
Ham was up to bat. He always calls him self ridiculous names to impress himself. He pointed to the outfield like The Babe.
Everybody started laughing, DeNunez nearly falling over.
Kenny pitched it. Swing. And a miss.
"Woah, look at that thing go!" I teased.
"You call that pitching?" Ham said.
This time when Kenny pitched, the ball hit the bat making a loud crack. Me and Scotty ran a little in hopes of catching it. It went way over the fence.
"Ham, now we can't play anymore!" Benny yelled they all voiced their complaints. I watched them chase Ham all the way around the bases throwing gloves.
"Cmon Scotty, we can get it. I'll toss it over or somethin." I said. We went up to the fence climbing it.
"Smalls come back!"
"Donna get down!" They yelled.
"We can get it." Me and Smalls said. They yelled out names and Benny was first to get over there. Half of them went to Scotty and some went to me. Bennys arms quickly wrapped around my waist to pull me down.
"What are you doing?" I yelled while they pulled me down.
"Put me down Benny!" I said while they carried me and Scotty like royalty or somethin.
"You gonna get yourself killed!" They all yelled of absurd warnings. They were all out of breath as they backed.
"Holy crap, you could've been killed!" Squints said.
"Yeah yeah, truly, what are you doing?" Yeah yeah said.
"You guys were leaving." I said.
"I thought we could just jump the fence-" Scotty explained.
"If you were thinking you wouldn't have thought that." Squints said.
"You can't go back there." Benny said looking at me.
"Then how do we get the ball back?" Scotty said.
"We don't." Timmy said.
"We don't." Tommy repeated.
"It's history." Timmy said.
"It's history." Tommy repeated.
"Kiss it goodbye." Timmy said.
"Kiss it—"
"Shutup Tommy." Timmy said.
"It's gone man. Gone." Bertram said.
"Game's over." Benny said. "We'll just get another ball tomorrow." They all started walking away.
"Never see it again." Tommy said.
"Why not?" I asked.
"The Beast." They all said.
"What's that?" Scotty asked.
"Listen to me." Benny said putting his hand on my shoulder looking between me and Scotty. "Go to that fence, real slow and quiet."
"But I-I-" Scotty stuttered.
"No, no, no, no, no." Benny said. "Just go and peak through that fence."
"But I—But I saw something back there." Scotty said.
