the aftermath.

helaine felt as if her world was starting to collapse.

she couldn't breathe as soon as she had seen the small message dani had sent her.
her heart felt like it stopped as her body went cold.

the words she had told her daughter just the night before in the kitchen rang through her mind,
"i don't know what i would do if i were to lose you too."
helaine wanted to tell herself that she was overreacting. that maybe dani had sent the message just because she missed her mother.

but she knew better than that.

her gut told her differently. dani would never use her pager unless it was an emergency. something was wrong.

something had happened to her baby.

helaine couldn't remember the drive home, her thoughts erratic and her mind scrambled.
but she prayed dani was just in her room, sleeping soundly or maybe even listening to her music and doing homework.

she needed dani to be safe.

once helaine opened the front door to her house, she ran straight to dani's room without even bothering to close the front door.
"dani!" she called out, desperate to hear her daughters voice call back from her room.

but once she opened the bedroom door, she was met with no one.
not even the creak of the floorboards could say hello to her presence.

helaine wanted to collapse on the ground.

"dani!!" she screamed out as she went searching through every room in their small house.
"daniella, please come out!" helaine wanted to convince herself that dani was hiding somewhere giggling softly to herself as she waited for her mom to find her like how she used to as a small toddler, but she knew dani better than that.

she was all grown up, she would never do something so childish.

once helaine was met with every empty room in the house, she finally collapsed on the ground trying her hardest to keep steady breaths.
she was on the verge of hyperventilating and going into a panic attack.

she couldn't lose her only daughter.

she just couldn't.

after all the grief helaine had faced, she didn't know what she would do with herself if she lost dani.

her children were her purpose to keep going forward in life, she couldn't stand the thought of losing either one of them.
"mom!?" helaine's head snapped up, for a moment she thought it was dani. her mind playing tricks on her to finally hear her daughters voice after flipping her house upside down to look for her.

but it was nathaniel.

"nate?" she brokenly called out from the hallway, her son rushing toward her voice.
"what happened? you forgot me at the restaurant and left the front door open!" he called out, confused on his mothers actions and still dressed in his waiter uniform.
