Chapter 3: Obnoxious Banana Slugs
I felt like out of place, like being a red M&M in a bowl of blue ones. Adults, smart adults, infested this campus in the sea. Since we landed, I was told by Natasha to stay put by the plane. Stay put, do what you're told, that's what adults always said, those repulsive creatures. I sat on the side of the landing pad, brushing my hands in the ice cold water. Suddenly, I knew I was being watched. I turned to face Natasha.
"You might want to come inside..."
"Inside?" What did she mean, inside?
"Come on!" She urged and the tarmac started to vibrate. I pulled myself up, but it moved suddenly and I was thrown backward. Natasha tried to grab me, but her impeccably quick reflexes weren't quick enough. I closed my eyes, waiting to feel the chill of seawater, the burning saltwater, but I never did. As I looked down, I was dry as a desert, standing on the platform.
Natasha was staring at me, and I was staring at me too.
"What did you do?" I breathed in wonder. Natasha grabbed my hand and dragged me inside, water was pouring from the side of the ship like the pores of a sponge, but at last I was safe inside. I expected her to let go of my wrist, but she retained her iron-like grip. We passed a tall, muscular young adult, with blond hair. He eyed me with suspicion, probably wondering what I was doing here, on a flying boat. I shrugged at him.
"I don't know what I'm doing here either," I said, then tried to whisper to him, "Agent here, she's really clandestine." We passed another room, where Tony and a few others were seated, talking. A different muscular blond was in there, his hair was longer than mine. Awkward.
"Ah-ha! There he is!" Natasha said to herself.
"What's with all the muscular-" Natasha opened the door, "blondes," I finished quietly. Everyone was staring at me. I only recognized Coulson, Tony, and the short-haired blond guy.
"You said we wouldn't involve other human beings in this, Fury." The blond guy said in an assertive, strong voice.
"She is not of-" As the long haired guy spoke up, Natasha cut him off. Inside my head, something flicked on.
"Not yet, Thor. Steve this is different." I ripped my arm away her grip and clenched my fists angrily. I was tired of hearing vague half-truths.
I heard the door lock behind me. This SHIELD, whoever they were, didn't want me to escape. I noticed that I wasn't the only uncomfortable one. In the corner of the room stood another guy, in a purple shirt, nervously fiddling with his hands. Despite my hatred towards all of SHIELD, I was thankful for Natasha. The situation would have been really uncomfortable if I was the only girl. "Stop being so secretive about everything! I've been kidnapped from my home and you won't even tell me why! Who are you, really?" No one answered immediately.
"Nick, she needs monitoring now. On the tarmac she disappeared before she almost fell off." Steve, whoever he was, jumps in.
"You haven't even told her what she has to do?"
"Zip it, Cap," Natasha snarled, unlocking the door for another agent. "Go with them, Simmy."
"What, so you can monitor me? I refuse to be a part of your clandestine plan if you won't tell me what it is." I threw the door open and bolted out. Over the sound of my footsteps I heard Fury order someone to bring me back. I wasn't looking where I was going, and I honestly didn't care. Someone was yelling at me, but I heard a different voice in my head, someone beautiful, like I'd never heard before. It sent chills up my spine, but I let it speak to me. Slowly, it calmed me down, but in a brain numbing way. I was desperate to know what it was.
