Chapter 14
Mia's pov
I went into the kitchen behind Amy and began packing out and away the things I had bought. Amy went back to the living room and she and Leighton walked out to the porch talking with him still holding Mya. My nerves were on end as I assessed the situation, Leighton will no doubt only want to remain friends with Amy and the others from now on I thought. Now that he also knows I have a child, I wonder how much Amy has shared with him.
With nothing else to do, I took the personal items I had bought into my room with me. I put away mines and leave the rest in the bag for Amy and remained in my room until I heard Leighton's truck drive off and Amy came inside.
"I'll get started on dinner," I said nervously going into the kitchen.
Not wanting Amy to see how raw I was from seeing Leighton again and knowing we'll never share the closeness we had before. I automatically took out some of the cut up pork leg and began washing and seasoning it up.
Amy came in with Mya tailing behind her. "Lovely!" She exclaim and took out a snack which she opens and give to Mya.
"How was your day?" She ask pouring herself some apple juice.
"It was good, I can't complain," I told her.
"And I see yours was as well, you're not feeling ill despite the colder weather," I stated after.
"I'm so glad, me and Mya had a pretty good day," she said.
"Mr Laing has brought more fencing materials," she added.
Mincing up the onion and other seasoning I said. "He sure is an helpful man."
Amy laughed a little. "He has always been asking where Mya's mother was, now I guess he knows. He says she looks like you," she said calmly.
I felt her eyes upon me but didn't look up, I busied myself adding the seasonings to the hot oil in the pot and stirring them.
"I guess he does," I reply.
I only had a little bit of the dinner, the fridge was now cold enough and we put what needed to be kept cold or frozen inside it. After bathing Mya and setting her to play and watch boo boo train, I went and drove my car inside. Deno was lugging the fencing materials to the area where they would be joined, I wave at him taking out the filled propane gas tank from my car trunk. He walked in my direction wearing a healthy smirk on his sweat drenched face. I was cold and thought how ironic it was.
"You miss have some explaining to do," he said coming to stand in front of me.
I looked up at him. "I sure as hell do not," I stated knowing full well what he meant.
"Yes you do and we're not going scavenging in the morning, Laing has promised to come and give us a hand with erecting another part of the fence and you will be cooking lunch," he stated and hoiseted up the propane tank, striding off to my house.
I walked after him only catching up to him when he stopped on the porch and put down the propane tank.
"You've been warned," he said pinching my arm and walked off.
Sleep eluded me that night, I thought of all the excuses I could give and leave in the morning, but told myself I couldn't. The fence was benefiting me and my family also. My family, I thought. Yes my family I smiled, Amy was like my mother and the Grey's were like really great neighbors or cousins. It was nice to have people who were selfless and kind living among you, I feel so blessed to have them. We were similar in coming from a good life, to being homeless because of broken hearts, broken trust and we were all healing from deep hurt in different ways.
