Chapter two
Mia's pov
𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒚 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆, I told myself as I step out of the taxi. The imposing building in front of me housed offices of all different kinds of agencies. If I didn't get through with the one I was going to, I'll try my luck with the others- I said confidently in my mind. I hand over my fake identification card that Amy had got me and went in with the others, across the hall I spotted Gemma the same time she spot me and she winked at me and I gave her a thumbs up.
One by one the women before me entered the office, some came out smiling while some with disappointed faces. When it was my time I went in, I was asked a few questions and then said I would be placed on a two-week trial and paid eighteen hundred dollars per week. I was ecstatic and gave Gemma another thumbs up as she passed me going in. To be getting eighteen hundred dollars per week will make me rich in no time, I smiled as I got into the taxi to go back to our shack. In a few months, I would be able to change our situation and give Mya and Amy a better life.
Amy seemed to have just arrived back when I reach home that afternoon, she looked at me questioningly and I smirked. She smiled widely and threw her arms around me squealing like a child.
"Yesss yesss, I knew you could do it, ohhhh I've prayed so hard."
"Did you get through with the phones?" I asked her.
"Yes," she said and went for her bag.
"Sheldon really wanted me to sell him the iPhone fifteen pro max and I got six hundred dollars for the iPhone fourteen, he only gave me five hundred dollars because he put in a new screen which was the only thing wrong with them- broken screens," she informed me.
"Ok. No problem, it's way better than nothing. Did you tell him you could sell him another?" I said with a sigh then ask.
"Yes, but I stopped by Brandon and he offered me a better price for the iPhone thirteen," she reasoned.
Good thinking I smiled. "Great, you'll take it to him when we go shopping and I'll scavenge a bit while you wait for them to fix the iPhone fourteen screen and I'll buy us sim cards to get them set up," I said and she beamed.
Later that evening we went shopping, having only an icebox we could only purchase mainly none perishable items. We leave our groceries packed in our old push trolley at the store and I parted ways with her and Mya. After buying the sim cards, I went to the open lots behind the mall where some dumpsters are. It would be nice to know that Mya's and Amy's bellies were filled while I was at work, better yet because I wasn't sure if I will have time to scavenge after work in the evenings. I was feeling happy and in good spirits nonetheless, just the thought of being able to have a proper and secure roof over our heads made me feel happy.
After searching for over an hour, I carried my meager findings to the pawn shops where I bargain with them until I was done selling. I washed my hands and used the restroom, then went to the store to collect our groceries. The evening was darkening into the night and I went to where I would be meeting up with Amy and my baby girl.
They were emerging from Brandon's electronics-only pawnshop and Amy beamed with a smile pointed her finger showing Mya where I was. She raced towards me and I lift my hands showing her to slow down, I smiled at her in place of lifting her because I had been in the dumpsters.
"Can we have Chinese food please?" Amy said with a laugh as she placed some fifty and twenty-dollar bills in my hand.
"Yes, we can," I said.
