REBECCA let out a deep breath as she helped Scotty patch up the handful of warriors who had been injured. Kula and Vincent’s mother, Hara, were helping with the bandages and stitches while the human focused on making salves for the Beastial’s sore muscles.
Ryker had ordered Vincent and one of the other Beastials to take Robert and the remaining soldiers to the jail cells until he had decided what to do with him.
They couldn’t kill the humans, but they couldn’t send them back either - it put the Beastia’s too much at risk. But, Rebecca was sure that Ryker had a plan, if the way he seemed to be having the remaining Beastial’s gather all their essentials was anything to go by.
“We have another community up in the mountains. When the droughts hit, we go up there because of the springs in the caves and the rivers and falls that lie in the crevices.” Scotty had told her when she had asked about Ryker’s behavior. “We have a lot of supplies up there and it is only a few hours away from here.”
“Will we come back?” Rebecca asked and the healer seemed to ponder her question for a few seconds before answering.
“We will when it is safe too.” He nodded before giving her a slight smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “Think of it like a vacation.”
“I feel like this is all my fault.” She muttered, her eyes drifting over to Jackie who had yet to let go of Peter. She could only phantom how the other brunette was feeling right now.
“Your father would have done this anyway, Rebecca, there was nothing you could have done.” Scotty tried to reassure her, but she could only sigh, going back to mixing the pasty substances in the small bowl in her hands.
“Scotty?” They both looked to see Ryker watching them. “Mind if I borrow Rebecca for a little bit?”
The old healer just waved them off, and Rebecca stood from her spot - slowly making her way towards Ryker, who wrapped his arm around her shoulder as soon as she was close to him.
“How are you holding up?” He asked as they walked around, both of them wincing at the damage that had been done to the community.
“I’m hanging in there.” She responded, giving a one shoulder shrug before looking up at the Beastial. “What about you? I know you and Xavier were close.”
Ryker sighed, rolling his jaw a few times before answering. “It’s hard, but it comes with the territory of life, people die and there is nothing you can do but move on and keep them alive by spreading their stories.”
“Wise words for someone of your maturity.” She teased, hoping to get the blonde to smile and it worked for just a second.
“My uncle told me that after my parents died. I remember being so distraught, but all I needed was a good cry and a few hours of tearing down the training dummies and I was back in control of my rage.” Ryker shrugged and Rebecca reached up to grab Ryker’s hand that was clutching her arm - giving it a reassuring squeeze. “I am worried about Arden, her and Xavier had something going on.”
“Have you talked to her yet?” The human asked.
“No not yet, with everything going on I haven’t had the time.” The blonde admitted shaking his head ever so slightly.
Rebecca knew he felt bad and he shouldn’t have. With Xavier gone and Jackie not wanting to be the next leader - the duties of the Chief fell upon Ryker. And at the moment the clan was in desperate need of Ryker’s leadership.
“I can talk to her, if you’d like.” The brunette smiled softly. “Your aunt and uncle are busy and so are you.”
“You can try if you want, but I don’t know how far you will get with her - the girl is far more stubborn than me.”
Rebecca snorted, a laugh building in her throat and she struggled to smother it. “I find that hard to believe.”
Ryker gave her a playful glare, before he smirked and the human jumped when she felt a smack on her ass.
“Ryker!” She hissed, a flush of blood covering her face and painting the tips of her ears a light shade of pink. “Now is so not the time.”
“When we are safe, I will show you why Beastial men are better than humans.” He rumbled in her ear and she barely held in a gasp as she felt his hand sneak up her shirt.
“We will see.” She smirked, leaning up to kiss his cheek before making her way back towards the other, ignoring the way Scotty was fake gagging.
“Two strikes, Rebecca! Two! Strikes!” She heard Ryker yell at her and once again she just continued walking until she had come to stand beside the old healer - who had stopped his gagging.
“Honestly, children these days. Back when I was young we took our women on dates before ravaging them.” Scotty reminisced and Rebecca scrunched her nose up in disgust. Then after a second she smiled, moving to help a young man who was holding his shoulder in pain.
“No back in your day, dinosaurs were your mode of transportation” She teased, feeling Scotty’s eyes shooting daggers into the back of her head.
“I’ll have you know that I am 88!”
“Yeah in dog years!
“Haven’t you learned to respect your elders?” Scotty grumbled and Rebecca laughed, shaking her head and giving the amused Beastial in front of her a wink.
“I have but all I see in front of me is an old goose.”
“Why you!” She barely ducked in time as a wet rag was tossed at her face.
“Aww does someone need a nap?” Rebecca laughed and for the first time that day she felt happy.
Yes the clan had been destroyed, and sadly they had lost a friend - but, they would heal. Yes the wounds today would forever scar a memory onto Hemlock Hollow. Right now, Rebecca was okay - she was at home and nothing could change that.
Oh how wrong she had been.
