Chapter 6:
You stood there silent not sure what to do or say, it was a lot to process 'why does he look like that, how did he find me' you thought. Mika was now jumping on the counters and just about to get into a ruckus, James got to her just in time "Woah there Princess, wouldn't want to mess up your new home so soon." Mika was quick to react and start throwing a fit in James's arms until she was put down.
"New home?" you questioned.
He fixed his suit up and tried to ignore the scratches "Surprised!" he gestured with jazz hands. You scrunch your face, not exactly in confusion but something akin to seeing a disturbing sight. "I wish I could've given you more notice but I've tried as much as I can to take care of her but she just doesn't like me." He rubbed the back of his head.
"Who would," you muttered, not expecting him to hear.
James signed "Yeah...guess she takes after you huh." He walked closer to you with a face of guilt, it was the first time you saw him look so sad, remorseful. "Listen Y/N I know I can't apologize for all the things I said and did," He reached out and caressed your face. "But I've changed, I'm better and you don't have to come back but maybe we can be friends."
It wasn't exactly that he was coming in but he was too close as is, you pushed him back gently "I'm sorry but you have to leave," you said looking down at the floor afraid to see what kind of face he put on this time. James was going to answer but you cut him off before he could. "Mika can stay, please just go. I don't want to see you right now."
Seeing James drive off with, let alone walk away without hearing things crash or ending up with a mark was weird. He smiled the entire time and even apologized for disturbing you. It was a lot to think that he might have changed but then again you just stood up to him so maybe you both did. Mika was already settling in pretty well though, she was laying on your lap and getting extremely comfortable.
The door opened and she immediately was off to see who it was. Clint was carrying some bags and making a lot of ruffling noises "Hey babes I'm sorry I took so long but uhm I saw someone driving out when I was coming in." He yelled loud enough for you to hear but not to disturb. "Was it some shady businessman again? '' He cut himself off and stopped.
You were walking after Mika who turned the corner and disappeared, when you caught up you could see Mika strutting in front of Clint as if she were scoping him out. Clint was confused and even more so when you walked in behind her "Baby....Did that man sell you a cat?"
---
When you and Clint sat down to talk you didn't know what to say, he knew about your past but you also knew he'd start to worry about you when he might not need to. You didn't want to lie with malicious intent, but maybe it was best.
"Yeah so I'm just going to be taking care of her for a while, I'm sorry I didn't tell you in advance...sorta came out of the blue," You said to Clint hoping he wouldn't see through your ruse.
"Let me get this straight, your friend showed up and just gave you their cat before they went on a vacation? Sounds pretty irresponsible." He said rubbing the bridge of his nose. He grabbed the remote to the TV and waited to start the movie "You're lucky I love animals." Mika sat in his lap so comfortably. A smile crept on your face as you for a moment were able to enjoy this moment. Able to forget about James and exist at this moment with Clint, you knew the following days would be hard to adjust to but right now you could care less.
The following morning something unexpected happened. You woke up to an empty bed, It wasn't wired for Clint to wake up and just go missing. Not questioning if you went to the bathroom, the morning was nice and calm, especially seeing as last night Clint was a bit more rambunctious than usual adjusting to the guest. 'At Least neither of didn't break anything' You thought as you stepped out of the bathroom. As if by coincidence or divine irony there was a subtle crashing sound that came from downstairs.
Clint was downstairs shopping bags in hand and Mika attempting to climb him "hey how could you be a little less playful". He was trying to shush her but she just kept mowing and he'd accidentally knocked down a metal vase. He'd manage to catch it with one foot but ultimately Mika pawed it down and it made a subtle yet prominent crashing sound "Shit." he said, laying down the bags, trying to calmly pick up the vase.
"Good Morning to both of you," You said as
you stood over Clint who'd kneel with the vase in hand.
He looked up with an awkward smile "Morning gorgeous, I'm guessing I woke you up?" He said standing up pulling you into him. You kissed him "Would've preferred a different kind of way to wake up but I'll take this as well".
The morning was spent with you and Clint setting up 'cat stuff' he'd bought. He didn't want to admit it but he was absolutely in love with Mika, even though he was a dog person he had room in his heart for this one cat. Although you wanted to keep him to yourself for the rest of the day he had left for meeting by noon leaving you and Mika home alone. It was boring at first, you spent a couple hours just thinking and watching out the window. You ended up passing out on the couch.
