The New Recruit

I tilted my head and opened the bag.

"Doggy treats?"

"Yup."

"I don't understand. Why do I have do- ohhhhh. The new recruit is a doggy?"

Justin smiled and chuckled.

"Her name is Clover. Would you like to help train her for search and rescue?"

"Yes please??"

Justin took my hand and led me to a huge room with an obstacle course.

"Wow. this is awesome!"

That's when a bloodhound ran up to me.

"Ethan, this is Clover."

"Hi Clover, wow you're a beautiful bloodhound. I hope you're ready to work."

Clover howled and a person came jogging over and saluted Justin.

"Hello chief. Who's this?"

"Hello Marcus. This is Ethan. He's here to help you train Clover in search and rescue."

"Ah, perfect. I was about to go around the station."

Justin chuckled and Clover howled. Almost like she was laughing too.

"Well Ethan, are you ready? I promise you won't be in any danger. I have done this for ten years."

I smiled.

"I trust you."

Justin then kissed my head.

"Be good for me okay? Listen to sergeant Marcus and do your best, okay?"

"Will do Baby."

"Good boy."

Justin then left, heading back to the station. I look at the sergeant and smile.

"So Ethan, are you ready to help train Clover?"

"Yes sir."

He then took me to a 'collapsed building' site. I climbed in and tried to hide well so the sergeant couldn't see me. Hoping that Clover could find me.

"Okay Ethan, are you ready?"

"Yup, I'm ready."

I then heard him walk a good distance away. I then heard Clover howl. Hearing the dog then dashing towards the wreckage. More howling and then sniffing. I heard another howl and saw Clover.

"Is he there Clover?"

Clover howled.

"Okay Ethan, hand her a treat."

I stuck my hand out holding a biscuit. I felt Clover gently take the treat and back up. I then felt Marcus pull me up.

"I'm going to be honest. I didn't even see your body until you stuck your hand out."

"Is that why we have search and rescue dogs?"

"Yes, just in case we can't locate your body or if you're missing, we can send Cloveror another dog to find you. Especially in a collapsed building like this."

"Awesome."

This went on for a few hours until Justin came over. I was hiding in a really grassy area with fake blood on my arms.

"Okay Clover, find Ethan, he's really hurt and needs to be found."

Clover howled and started sniffing out my scent. She then howled and ran towards me, licking my cheek.

"Good job Clover!"

I handed her the last biscuit in the bag and scratched behind her ear.

Marcus walked up and patted my back.

"You did pretty well Ethan."

"Thank you sir."

"I'm damn proud of you."

That's when I saw Justin walking up to us smiling.
