"are we there yet?!" i whined, glaring at my mom from the backseat of the car. she laughed at my question. "not yet, we still have a few minutes to go, okay?" my mom told me.
i sighed and leaned back in my seat. tonight we're going to the beach, just the two of us.
we're going to sail the paper boats she always makes!! i'm really excited!
she forgot where we were going for a bit though. she went the wrong directions so it's taking us longer to get there. it took me by surprise, it kind of hurt my feelings a little bit. i thought it was important to her like it is to me. but i guess it's alright. i get to stay up late.
mom wanted shoda to come, but i told her i didn't want him to. sailing boats was something we've always done alone; i want to keep it that way.
sure i like shoda, he's really nice and helps me with my homework sometimes. he also cooks a lot. i just don't feel comfortable including him in our family traditions, not yet anyways. it's been the two of us for as long as i can remember. it's only fair to give me some time to adjust to having another person in the family.
i leaned my elbow on the door and held my face in my palm, looking out the window. my eyes widened when i saw that she was already pulling up to the beach's parking lot.
"c'mon sweetie, now grab your stuff. don't be too loud, alright?"
i quickly unbuckled my seatbelt and grabbed my towel and bag from the car. it was dark, so we had to use flashlights to see where we were going. the two of us started walking towards our spot.
it seems we've come here a hundred times, but the excitement never leaves. i've always loved spending time with my mom. sure i have other friends. but she's my bestest friend.
we set our towels on the sand and kneeled down in front of the water. i looked over to my mom and saw her staring at the water in awe.
"isn't it beautiful, y/n? the way the light from the moon reflects on the water? it's so perfect." she told me, not taking her eyes off the sea.
"yeah, it's pretty." i said with a grin plastered on my face. she spent a few more seconds staring into the water. "now, without further ado.." she started, grabbing some boats out of her bag.
she took the bigger one and handed me the smaller one. "three, two, one." we both gently placed the boats in the water. we leaned back and i laid my head down on her lap. she started stroking my hair as she hummed.
"mom?"
"yes sweetheart?"
"when are you going to teach me how to make a boat? i want to do it and get good at it like you." i asked her. i heard her chuckle and she tucked a piece of my hair behind my ear.
"soon, love. very soon."
i closed my eyes and smiled while her humming lulled me to sleep.
y/n turned over, clenching her jaw. "dammit. not another night like this. please. just let me sleep" she thought.
she moved to lay on her right side with her knees to her chest and her eyebrows furrowed.
"y/n, hurry up! we don't want to be late." shoda yelled to me from downstairs.
we're going to visit mom in the hospital. over these past few months she's been really sick. she'd been acting differently. more forgetful. more tired. sometimes she would need help walking. so, she went to the hospital. she got admitted.
when we got there, shoda let me walk into her room to talk to her alone. when i slid the door open she looked towards my direction, startled.
"oh, hi sweetie."
"hi mom."
it was silent for a bit. i didn't want to ask her how she was feeling or if she was okay or anything. obviously the answer would be something negative. i'm not stupid. i know she's trying to mask her symptoms. so i brought up something that i know would for sure make her happy.
"so.." i started. "can you teach me how to make a boat now?"
she sat up in her hospital bed and smiled widely. "of course!! bring that over here, get out some paper." she said, gesturing to the rolling table that was near the corner of the room.
i did what she said and she went over it with me, step by step. when we finished, hers looked significantly better than mine. but it's okay. i just need to practice.
"they're perfect." she pulled me in for a hug.
y/n turned to her other side, this time laying straight. "please." she whispered to herself.
"mom."
