The stares.
I couldn't help but respond to the many stares that were directed my way.
I waved nervously, and a few innocent kids waved back. One mother however snatched her son's hand and pulled him away. I smiled awkwardly, my teeth just as gunky as what Laura's had been.
"These monsters," One of the men in the distance whispered to a bystander, "I swear they're multiplying."
OUCH! That hurt there, right in my heart!
My lips turned down in a hurt frown and I only stomped on ahead, heading for Laura's grandma's house.
When I reached it, I turned my head around quickly, the whole town ducking their eyes away, pretending they weren't watching. But when I turned my view back to the door, I could feel their stares burning into my back.
I took a deep breath in. Out. In. Out. I rattled my knuckles to the wood of the door and placed my hands on my hips, waiting there with a big grin on my face.
The door slowly creaked opened and old elderly Paulina raised her dark eyes up to me, her jaw hanging open.
"Who are you...?"
She seemed scared, but not repulsed like the rest of the neighborhood. I smiled widely, and pointed to myself as I said quickly, my voice calm and nice.
"It's me, Paulina!"
She only crooked her eyebrows confused and I added on quickly.
"Camilo!"
She blinked her wrinkled eyelids a few times, and I decided I had to make my appearance more familiar.
I quickly shifted into my normal clean looking form, and her eyes widened with twinkles as she grabbed my cheeks and expected me in glee.
"Ah! My suitor!"
"Not YOUR suitor!" I squeaked, and pushed her gently away, peeping past her head to the dark inside of the cottage, "I'm here for Laura."
Paulina only frowned, unhappy about my reasoning to visit and she only waved me in, muttering to herself, "What does SHE have that I don't have?"
I laughed nervously as she directed me to the back of the cottage and pointed to the open door that led the way. I nodded, filled with giggles as I shifted back into my hideous state from earlier.
I went past the open door and looked around, till I saw a ratty-looking girl sitting down just beside a large lake.
Her back was turned to me, but it was clear she didn't want any visitors. That she was upset over something even though I could not see her face.
My steps became lighter as I approached her, and when she heard a twig snap under my foot, she froze up. She tossed around quickly on her knees, looking up at me and me at her.
I was about to wave when she suddenly let rip a HUGE SCREAM!
She flung to her feet, stepping back from me frightened. What was I saying? She was TERRIFIED!
"Laura! Laura!" I said quickly but she only stumbled back on her legs before dashing her eyes over my features. Then, she HERSELF went dashing towards the woods and I groaned heavily, knowing I'd have to go after the poor frightened girl. Jeesh!
I slogged on after her, watching her run for her life and I said to myself in dire annoyance, "I'm not THAT UGLY!"
Soon I lost sight of her, and I grumbled heavily to myself but then I heard branches being snapped and I turned my eyes up, seeing her hanging from the top of a weak trunk tree.
