The world was beautiful. The world was right.
Nothing could dampen my mood at that moment, on that day. I had butterflies in my stomach and a flutter in my heart. I was near skipping through the village in joy and the residents of the place only looked on at me, returning smiles at my goofy nature.
I soon found my way back to my home, my eyes laying ahead and gazing at our casita. Yes, life... it was good.
I skipped up to the door and it flung open, allowing me to come in. As I entered the building I suddenly realized how quiet it was.
I looked around confused, there was not a soul to be seen. This was very weird.
"Hello?" I called out, my hand cupping the side of my mouth to make my shout travel farther, "Anyone home?"
"Shh!"
I blinked surprised when I saw Dolores wave me over from the kitchen and I followed her quickly. She grabbed my upper arm, pulling me aside, and whispered in hurried scared words.
"The adults are talking to Isabella,"
"Huh?" I replied and turned my head in the direction of Isabella's room upstairs but Dolores directed me back to herself as she said.
"About why she kissed you."
I felt goosebumps travel up my arms when she said this and I nodded hard, turning and heading for the stairs.
"Are you crazy, Camilo?"
"I just want to hear," I muttered back in a distant annoyed voice. My sister was making this unnecessarily complicated.
When I reached the upper hall and walked in very quiet steps over to Isabella's shut door, I placed my ear nervously against it, listening in.
"Isabella," I heard Abuela say exasperated, "Please tell us, why you kissed your cousin?"
I could hear shaky breathing come from my cousin and listened close as I heard her cry.
"I thought he was a girl."
"But why?" Abuela insisted, her voice sounding hurt and choked itself, "Why would you want to kiss another girl?"
I bit my bottom lip and heard Isabella say in nearly an ashamed whisper.
"I'm... not like other girls."
"What do you even mean by this?" Felix asked her, demanding for her to explain.
Again, I could hear the tortured breathing of Isabella's breath and I stepped aside immediately when she rammed the door open and just ran out of the house screaming in tears.
I pressed up against the wall the second I saw the adults of the family rush out and try to follow her down the stairs. I slowly crept away to my room and hid in there for a few minutes, still listening half afraid, at our elders' voices.
"What does she mean...?" Abuela asked, sounding hurt as she looked at her children and inlaws, "When she says, she's not like 'other' girls."
"I think she's just confused, Mama," Julietta said, trying some way, somehow to protect her daughter.
"But what is she confused about?" Abuela demanded nearly and I lowered my eyes to the ground, trying to figure this out by myself.
I stayed there for a few more minutes till I heard the family disband and I slowly crept out of my room, rushing quickly down the stairs. I was stopped, however, by Dolores as she stood before me just as I was about to leave the house.
"She's in the meadow, near the lake."
I looked at my sister, puzzled she was giving me this vital piece of information. Dolores only gave a soft nod to me and pointed me to the door, adding on quickly.
