Your best friend was dealing with an abundance of grief.
Her parents were dead, her brother was dead and now her love, her Vision, was dead. You were the only person she had left.
What's worse is that Vision died for nothing.
Twice.
Thanos was unsuccessful with the blip, yet all Wanda wanted to do was disappear.
The trip back to the compound from Wakanda was a quiet one. The only sounds were the light hum of the quinjet and Wanda's sobs as she cried in your arms for the duration of the flight.
Once you arrived, you carried her inside and went to your bedroom. You sat down on your bed, resting your back against the headboard as she continued to cry in your lap.
Her body continued to shake, but you could feel that her tears were stopping. Perhaps she had no tears left. You continued to hold her and her body slowly became less tense as you felt more of her weight on you.
Her body kept shaking sporadically like she was trying to cry but couldn't. It broke you to see her this way.
You wanted her to feel better, but you knew there wasn't much you could do. You wanted so badly to make her pain stop. You wanted to tell her that everything would be okay. You wanted to tell her that she'd always have you, no matter what. You wanted to tell her how much you love her. You wanted to tell her how much you were in love with her. You wanted her to feel loved and whole again, but you knew you couldn't do that.
You knew you couldn't make everything better with three words. Three words you had been dying to tell her for so long, but somehow always knew you would never be able to. That broke you. That had been breaking you, but none of that mattered because the woman in your arms was breaking by far more than you ever had.
Her breathing started to even out and you glanced down at her to find her fast asleep. You kept your hold on her as it was, not wanting to disrupt her sleep.
Tears threatened to fall from your eyes. Tears you hadn't even realized you were holding back, holding back for her.
You cried silently, trying to just let the tears fall and wash away your pain.
You closed your eyes and whispered, almost pleading, "it should've been me."
You knew she couldn't hear you. She could never know what you felt for her. There would never be a right time.
"It should've been me."
