There were so many stars. Silver stared up at the stars shining against a deep navy canvas. He couldn't see the stars in the future through the smoke or his own tears.
What was he doing wrong? Why was the future a mess every time he returned? Why wasn't one of his efforts worth anything? Just one. There had to be just one that would change the future.
Sonic offered for the ivory hedgehog to hang out in the past, but Silver didn't belong there. He belonged in his own time, and it showed. He wanted to stay in a beautiful world, but he knew that eventually, he'd have to return to his own time, to face his broken music.
Silver pulled his gaze away from the heavens, lowering his head as he started down the street. He didn't know where he was going. He didn't have anywhere to go except for a shattered future, and he didn't want to go back quite yet.
His boots scuffed against the sidewalk, his eyes fixed on the motion. His ears perked as he heard a second set of footsteps, lifting his head.
Walking down the street towards him, head tilted towards the sky, was a (f/c) (a/t). Silver's lips parted slightly, coming to a stop as he took her in. She had gentle features, the stars reflected in her eyes, her expression soft.
She looked like comfort and heaven, and Silver was positive he was dreaming.
She lowered her head, her gaze meeting his, and he snapped out of his stupor, color flooding his cheeks as he floundered. "I--uh--sorry!" he exclaimed, waving his hands frantically. He pressed his hand to his chest. "Creep, me, creep, just staring at you--I'll just..." He groaned, his whole body sagging forward. "Sorry. I'll, uh, I'll go now."
"Wait," she said, stepping towards him with a soft laugh. Warmth filled Silver's chest at the sound and he straightened, his ears standing straight as she stopped in front of him, extending her hand. "It's okay. It was kind of weird for me to just be walking randomly on the street at night, but the stars..." Her lips curved upwards, Silver's tail wagging embarrassingly as he took in the expression.
"Uh, er, I'm Silver," he said hastily, reaching forward to grab her hand and shake it, barely refraining from grabbing her hand with both of his. Get it together.
She smiled, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. "(Y/n)."
"(Y/n)," Silver echoed, a giddy grin stretching across his face. He shook himself off, releasing her hand and sticking his arms to his sides. "Are you...um...are you from around here?"
"Yeah," she replied, her hand drifting back to her side. She tilted her head back up towards the stars, the soft breeze ruffling her fur. "Such a beautiful night. Something like this shouldn't go to waste." She smiled back at him. "Don't you think?"
Silver frowned slightly. "Well, it's a little dangerous to be walking in the dark alone," he said, stepping closer before he could stop himself. She laughed lightly.
"Says you," she teased. He blushed, brow furrowing in embarrassment.
"Well, it's different for me," he said defensively. He stepped back, raising his hands. "I can..." He glanced from side to side, spotting the water trickling through the gutters. He turned his attention to the stream, raising the water from the gutter and twisting it into an oblong shape.
(Y/n)'s lips parted in awe, the light of Silver's power refracting through the water and casting ethereal patterns across her face.
His focus slipped.
The (a/t) yelped as the water came splashing down to the street, Silver exclaiming in distress as he frantically tried to salvage the situation, but her legs and shoes were already soaked. "Aw, no," he groaned, covering his face with his hands. "I'm so sorry, I'm a mess, a failure, gah--"
