Waves of love (Gale) (Unedited)

I flicked my tail into the waves. Water splished high into the air. I loved my home.

Paris chattered at me, completely ruining the mood.

"So, the full moon's tomorrow."

We both knew what that means. Paris is a selkie. On full moon nights she becomes human. She's like a reverse Cursed Wolf.

"Oh yeah." I kinda had forgotten. "I'm going to Trip's for dinner though. Do you want to come?"

Paris chattered excitedly.

"Of course I want to come. Wait, won't that be rude? Surface people don't like unannounced guests. They make fun of them on TV and everything."

I paused and thought. Before I could answer I heard a loud yelling of an unknown human word. English is my second language, so I have no concept of slang. Merish is my first language. It's the language of the sea. All sea creatures speak a version of it, so I can talk to Paris in seal form, though she speaks about as much English as I do.

"Booyah!!"

My tail splits effortlessly into legs as a human barrels into view.

He's in his teens, isn't wearing a shirt, and is wearing a skimpy bathing suit bottom that really shows off. I force myself to look away.

A girl walks slower after him. She's wearing a proper amount of clothes but takes them off as she approaches the water. Underneath she has a skimpy suit.

Paris chatters.

"What are those fools doing?"

The water around here is dangerous, full of currents and tides. It's called SharkBite Beach for a reason.

I lean in and whisper.

"I don't know. But whatever you do, don't make eye contact. They may bite."

Paris bursts out laughing. They look over and see us. They start to stare.

I feel awkward. I make sure I have legs, and appropriate clothes. I'm wearing shorts that apparently are supposed to be a bathing suit on it's own, and a tee shirt that used to have an ad for a surf shop on the back. I never wear shoes.

They yell to each other, then start to run in my direction. I jump up, and Paris dives into the sea.

"Paris don't leave me!"

As embaressing as that sounds, I'm genuinely scared here. Unicorns were hunted to near extinction centuries ago. By humans.

"Stay away from me!" I yell.

It has no affect because I said it in Merish. They stop and stare. That gives me plenty of time to dive beneath the waves and disappear. I don't need my tail to swim fast. A few seconds later I pop up, maybe three hundred feet from the shore. They stare at me. I figure out how to speak English again.

"Hello!" I yell across the water.

After a moment of brief silence they reply.

"How can you swim so fast?"

"What did you say to us?!"

The girl elbows the guy. It occurs to me that they probably took my Merish shout the wrong way.

"I asked you who you were! And why are you on a private beach! In Kilavanian!"

As far as I know Kilavanian isn't a real thing, but it sounds forgien, so people don't think twice. If necessary I go into a long boring fake history lesson about the bravery of the Kilavanian people as they fought off the Mongoose Tribe. None of this is real, but it scares people away when you seem intrested in talking about stuff like this.

More silence.

"We didn't know that the beach was private!"

Of course they did. Everyone knows the rumor of the grumpy man that owns this land.

"Get out!" I yell in fury, making them ashamed and forgetful of the fact that I swim way too fast, to be possible for a Normal.

"Gosh, dude we just want to have some fun! Or don't you know what that is!"

I can see the girl talking angrily towards him. Not with, towards.

He stomps off.

"Jerk!" I hear her yell at him. He makes what I assume is a dirty human gesture at her.

Then leaves. It's silent and I think for a second she's going to leave too.

She then jumps into the water.

"She's an idiot." Paris says. I can't help but agree. Currents like these are fun for a Mer and larger water creatures, but for a human...

She quickly sinks below the waves.

"Definitely." I reply. In Merish.

"So should I rescue her?" Paris asks. "Though it might be hard because I'm a seal."

I sigh.

"I don't want to rescue her because A: she's an idiot B: she'll fall in love with my epic glory because I saved her life and I'm awesomely attractive."

"And gay with a boyfriend."

"True. So I can use that to tell her I'm not interested. Great idea Paris!"

"While I love to take credit, that's not what I meant. But we should talk about this after you save her."

"Can I save her anonymously?"

"Why not."

0000000000000000000000

I laid her down gently on the sands, then prepare to dive back into the waves, when she grabs my arm.

I look at her. She looks half delirious. If I was in Mer form she probably wouldn't even notice.

"Who are you?"

I dodged the question.

"These waters are dangerous."

She smiled at me.

"See you around, Dangerous Waters."

This is when I should have made my grand exit, but no.

"Excuse me?"

"I've always liked bad boys."

Then she passed out.

Paris yelled from the water.

"She's a nutcase!"

We laughed.

The boy comes back later. He sees her and panicks.

I'm just sitting on a rock, calling for him with my song. I need an excuse for what she thinks she saw.

"Feel free to take all the credit for her rescue." I say casually before I dive into the waves.

I can imagine that guy dirty gesturing at me.
