Dead end. I'd talked to every person who worked in the mall where he was last seen. Nothing. Though I did make seven people cry and scream in the agony of finding out their friend was dead.

I turned off the flow of water from the sink. The paper towel dispenser whirred. I turned to my idiot.

"Sock. Get. Out."

He waved his hand under the paper towel dispenser again. It spit out more paper towels. He spoke, completely ignoring the fact that he was in the Girl's Bathroom. As in the bathroom for girls.

"Don't these things detect body heat? I'm a ghost. Why does it give me paper towels?"

Seriously? We were on a murder case and he was obsessing over paper towels. This guy is never serious.

"Sock. I know half the world's population can't see you, but that doesn't mean you can freak out the half that can by being in the Girl's Bathroom."

He looked at me. He suddenly smiled.

"You know part of the reason I died was to get away from my mother."

I slapped his arm.

"Out!" I screamed. He rubbed his arm. The science of hitting a ghost and leaving a mark escapes my comprehension.

I pointed towards the door. He walked out, fake shooting himself in the head with his fingers. I think he was trying to offend me. It failed.

"That's not funny!" I yelled. It didn't fail.

"I swear, one day I will get rid of him." I muttered as I washed my hands again. Sorry Sock, I just don't know where you've been. Or what stuff you randomly touched, being a boy and all.

The toilet flushed. I screamed in terror. I've been attacked in a bathroom while on a case before. Poor vampire got disintegrated. Oopsie.

"Sock!" I screamed again.

The universe decided to slap me in the face. His mother walked out of the bathroom stall.

"Ms. Sock's mom?" I asked without thinking. Okay so maybe Sock isn't his real name. Or what he went by when he was alive. And maybe I don't know his real name because he's afraid I'm gonna look him up in White Pages. Though I know where he used to live.

She blinked. I stared. After a few seconds I decided to bluff it out.

"Oh, sorry. I thought you were someone else." She might have gone back to her normal routine and I might have run away with dignity. But no. The universe decided to kick me while I was down.

Sock had heard me scream and decided to make a delayed heroic rescue. He walked through the wall.

"What's the emergency? Is it a vampire because you really do not need my help with vampires. You disintegrated that last one very well."

He noticed me gesturing wildly, pointing at his mom, and finally slapping myself. His brain finally got the picture.

"Mom?! Why are you here?"

I had the urge to tell him she was shopping then had the random urge to take a dump. But he was too much in shock to hear.

The universe decided to do me a favor. His mom fainted from shock.

I took the time to dry my hands before dragging him out and away from the bathroom. This is why boys don't belong in the Girl's Bathroom.

The universe decided to laugh in my face and chain me to a wall. Luna ran up.

"Any leads?"

I pushed past her.

"Can we talk maybe, not here? Sock made an old lady pee herself, and I don't want to get arrested."
