Manhattan, New York.
October 10, 1983Free. That was how you felt as you sat in the passenger seat of Mandy's car at 2 a.m. Between the chill of late fall, the radio playing, and the weed taking its affect, your senses began to overload and your thought started to blur.
"You gonna pass it or not?" Mandy ask you. How would one describe Many Brooks? She came from a white bred, trust fund, silver spoon up her a*s, all American family. Even though you lived similar lives on the outside, you couldn't be more different on the inside. Her dad makes 6 figures a year, yours died 2 years ago. Her mom is a personal assistant to some old rich guy, your mom is a cleaner for Mandy's family. Her dad paid pretty well, which is the only reason you're able to afford a place in the city. And Mandy never lets you forget it. Ever. She's definitely not your friend, but her parents are your
Mom's boss, and you're constantly at her house, so it sort of feels like that sometimes."Dana. Earth to Dana!" She said while snapping her fingers in front of your face. "What?." "Pass it." "Oh sorry." You said hanging her the blunt. "So why did you want to come to this spot. People only come here to make out." She questioned. "Who said we're not about to make out?" "You're disgusting." You chuckled at her words and sighed. "I just like looking out into the city. It's so loud all the time, but up here it's quiet and peaceful." "That's depressing." She said after a few moments. It annoyed you how she clearly had no interest in what you were saying beige she quickly moved on to the next topic. But hey, you're stuck with her and this city for a few more years. Just suck it up for now.
You both sat in silence for a few minutes until you were bombarded with loud sirens and bright lights.
"Oh sh*t it's the cops." Mandy said as she buried the bad of weed under the seat. "This cannot be happening." You whispered. "Try to look sober." She said in a panic. You both took deep breaths and tried to look put together as the officer signaled for Mandy to roll down the window."Hi officer." The blonde said through the window.
"He said roll it down." You whispered. "Then he'll smell the weed." She said quietly. "Ma'am, I'm going to need you to roll down the window." Mandy took a deep breath and slowly lowered the glass, meeting eyes with the officer. You could tell he was about to say something, but he quickly stopped his actions and covered his nose. "Both of you, out the car, now." He ordered sternly. "This cannot be my life." You sighed.✯
Sitting in the police station at 3 a.m is not what you expected to be doing tonight, and yet here you are. Waiting for your mom, you began picking at the skin around your nails. A habit you've been trying to stop for years.
"Dana!" You heard your mom yelled as she walked over to you. "Please don't be mad." "We're way past mad young lady. Go to the car." She said while pointing her finger towards the front door. You walked out of the station and got into the car, waiting for her to finish signing papers. When she finally did get into the car, she wouldn't talk to you. But you didn't dare say anything to her. It was so silent you swear you could hear her blinking. Unable to speak, make eye contact, or even move, all you could do was sit there and anticipate what was going to come.

"Can I just-" "No you cannot!" She yelled at you. "You don't even know what I was gonna say!" "It doesn't matter!" You rolled your eyes as you sat at the table. "Oh so you're rolling your eyes now?" "I literally didn't do anything." "Don't talk back to me."
"Oh my god." You whispered under your breath. "What did you say to me?" "Nothing!" You both sat in silence for a minute while she figured out what to say."I'm tired, Dana. I really am. Do you know how hard it is being a single mom to a kid who's doesn't listen?" "Do you know how hard it is being the kid of a woman who's never home?" "Don't turn this on me. I do what I have to do so that that you never have to struggle like I did. And how do you repay me? You go out and do all this sh*t." She took a deep breathe and waited a moment before speaking again. "You are not Mandy. You will never have the same chances she does because you're not rich, and you're not white." "Trust me, I'm the last person you need to explain that to." "Clearly I do, because you continue to sneak out and drink and smoke!" "Don't act all high and mighty, you're a few shots away from liver failure yourself." "Don't talk to me like that." "Why? Cause it's the truth? You haven't stopped drinking since Dad died! You're afraid, you're a coward who's afraid of facing the reality that your husband is dead, and isn't coming back!"
That was the last thing you said you felt the impact of her hand across your cheek. You were too shocked to say anything, so you just stared at her, not daring to let the tears spill from your eyes. "Go back some suitcases." She said in a monotone voice. "What?" You asked. "I spoke to your aunt Betty and uncle Mark the other day. I was telling her about your behavioral issues and they said that if I needed a break, you could stay with them in Indiana for a little bit." "You can't just send me to another state for a few month!" "Not a few months. I think it would be beneficial for you to spend the rest of your sophomore year in Hawkins." "Are you kidding me?! This is you issue! You abandon your problems the second things get hard!" "Don't make me slap you again! Go pack, then go to bed!" She ordered you.
You stared at her for a minute before following her directions.Walking into your room and closing the door behind you, you finally let the tears fall as you began to pack your things. When you finished, the room looked bland, as if the life had been sucked out of it. Accepting your fate, you moved the suitcases to the floor and got into bed.
