Hawkins, Indiana
November 6, 1983How did you go from partying with rich white kids every night in New York, to walking up your extended family's house in Indiana? If your dad wasn't dead, you'd say this was the worst thing to ever happen to you. Your Aunt Betty had picked you up from the airport. Sure your mom could've gone with you, but then you'd have to be around her, which is not something either of you wanted at the moment.
When she opened the door, you were greeted with your uncle Mark and your younger cousins, Lucas and Erica. Even though they were 12 and 8, they felt like babies to you. "Hey kiddo, let me take your bags upstairs." Your uncle said to you as he took the bags from you. "Thanks." You replied plainly. "Kids, why don't you show Dana to her room." Betty suggested. "But you said I could go to Mike's house today." Lucas stated. "You can, after you spend some time with your cousin who you haven't seen in two years." "Fine. This way." He said. "You're gonna sleep in my room." Erica said as she grabbed your hand and led you down the hall. "I hope you're a good roommate then." You joked. You always liked your cousins, no matter how irritating they could be.
"Ta-da!" Erica said as she opened the door to your now shared bedroom. You walked in the room and saw a bed with baby pink covers and pillows. "That's your bed." Erica said as she pointed to the other side of the room. Your head turned to a cot covered in white sheets and blankets with your suitcases on the floor next to it. "Great, now that you're here, I've got to go. See you later." Lucas said as he ran down the stairs. "Don't mind him, he spends more time at Mike's house than he does here." Erica explained. "It's fine." "Do you want to jump rope with me?" "Maybe later, I think I'm gonna unpack." "Ok, see ya." She said as she walked out of the room.
Before you got a chance to unpack, Betty walked into the room. "Hey sweetie, I don't know if you'd feel up to it right now, but Lucas is going to the Wheeler's house, so I was thinking you could go and spend some time with Nancy." Nancy Wheeler. You two weren't the best of friends, but you did hang out every time you were in town. "Don't you think it would be good to hang out with her before you start school tomorrow?" She's right. You didn't know anyone else in town except for the Wheelers. Maybe going over there would be such a bad thing. "Yeah, sure."
You quickly made your way downstairs to catch Lucas before he left. "Lucas?" "Yeah?" "I'm coming with you." "You want to play Dungeons and Dragons with four middle school boys?" "No, I want to hang out with Nancy. Seeing as she's the only person my age that I know in this town, your mom thought it would be good for me to spend time with her." "Ok, grab a bike." "You're joking right?" "Do I look like I'm joking?" You sighed and hopped on one of the bikes he was pointing to and made your way down the street.

After setting the bikes down outside, you and Lucas walked up to the front door. There house look the same as everyone else's in the neighborhood. A bland, middle class house, right at the end of a cul-de-sac. Lucas didn't even get the chance to ring the bell before Mike open the door. "You're late." Mike stated. "I know, my mom made me show Dana around." He said pointing to you. "Hey." You said with a awkward smile. Why did a 12 year old make you feel so uneasy? "I thought you lived in New York?" Mike asked. "Yeah, it's a long story. Is Nancy here?" "Upstairs, first room on the left." He said, letting you and Lucas in. "Thanks." You told him while making your way to her bedroom.
Knocking on the door, you tapped your foot anxiously and waited for her to open it. "Dustin! I said I don't want any pizza!" She yelled from inside her room. "It's not Dustin. It's Dana." There was silence for a moment before she quickly opened the door. "Dana?!" "Hey Nance." You quickly hugged each other and went into her room. "I thought you where in New York?" "Yeah, but my mom is being a jerk and shipped me off to Hawkins for my sophomore year. So you're stuck with me girlie." "Hey, at least we'll get to see each other every day instead of once every few years." "True."

You spent the next few hours catching up on each other's lives. You told her about Mandy and how you had to act like you liked her. She told you about Steve, Tommy, and Carol. They sounded like jerks to you, but you weren't going to tell her that. "So Steve is your boyfriend?" "Well...yes, but no." "I'm lost." "We do things that a boyfriend and girlfriend would do, but he hasn't officially said that's what we are."
"A man who won't commit, what else is new?" "So what about you. Any guys in your life?" "No definitely not." "Girls?" "Nancy." "What? It was just a question." You chuckled at her words. You had always adored girls the same way you did guys, but you didn't know what to call yourself. So you just didn't label it. "No. No guys or girls have my affection at the moment." "I could set you up with someone." "Absolutely not." "Why?" "Your taste in guys is very different than mine." "You don't trust me?" "Not with that."A few more hours went by before you had to go home. It was really late and it was a school night. After saying your goodbyes to Nancy and waiting for Lucas to stop talking to his friends, the two of you went home. Once you made it home safely, you quietly got into bed and mentally prepared for school tomorrow. Little did you know, there was horror taking place right across town.
