As she pushed her dark, vintage square frames up on her nose, the sound of thunder rippling throughout the dark sky briefly had caught the teenager attention as her home shook.
Despite a thunderstorm suddenly passing through her city without any warning, and with the sun now hidden behind some thick—dark thunder clouds, the highly recruited track & field athlete had her curtains pulled wide open to allow some type of natural light inside.
"You're getting so big now
You're making me so proud 'cause
You are such a star
And, you know that you are
So, every single little moment
I can't be there to hold your hand"Position in front of her window, with her back resting up against the bed frame of her queen size bed, Devyn sat there on her cream-colored carpet with a small, old-looking cardboard box in front of her. Blinking softly as a clap of thunder pulled her out of her short-lived daze, the teenager eyes briefly went back down towards the envelope in her hand, and frowned.
It has been roughly three months since she had came in possession of this letter—that's been hidden inside of this box for the past seventeen years. Three whole months. And she still couldn't find it in herself to open the letter, and read whatever her birth parents had inked on the paper.
There was a part of her, a very small part of her, that wanted to read the letter that had devyn noelle inked on the front part of the envelope. A part of her was curious as to what they had to say. Curious as to what their explanation would be for giving her up for adoption after one month after being born.
Curiosity killed the cat. She told herself, while she lightly traced her fingertips over the near handwriting of her name.
"I need for you to know that
I need for you to know that
Anything should happen, anything should happen
'Cause anything could, if anything should happen
Know that you'll be alright, know that you'll be alright
Just promise you'll be alright, promise you'll be alright"But satisfaction brought it back. The voice in the back of her mind said.
As she tilted her head back against her mattress—causing the hood from the over-sized hoodie she had on to partially covering her dark frames, she brought the letter closer to her and flipped it over to stare at the seal. She wasn't sure if reading this letter would satisfy her.
With her reaching up to rub her nose with the arm sleeve of the worn-out, and super old hoodie—that had Bringston Baseball displayed proudly across her chest, the familiar smell of the hoodie entered her nose, calming her nerves.
Despite her washing the hoodie multiple times before she actually put it on, there was still this distinctive smell that lingered on the hoodie. Nothing she did could get that smell out. Now, it wasn't a bad smell. Far for it, actually.
It was just a smell that let her know that this hoodie was her real father's favorite. She could tell by the way his natural odor and whatever cologne he use to wear was etched into the material of the hoodie.
Sighing for what seemed liked the umpteenth time in the last couple of minutes, the teenager kept her eyes locked on the envelope in her hand, as a small crease formed in the middle of her forehead. With the voice in the back of her head telling her to read the letter, the nationally ranked sprinter leaned forward a little—and pushed the hood back from her head with just a simple swipe of her hand.
Pushing her dark frames back up on her nose, Devyn hesitantly slipped her thumb between the seal flap and the bottom flap of the envelope—before pushing her thumb across the seal, spitting the envelope open. "Here goes nothing."
