The slight newleaf breeze made Thistlekit's light gray fur blow in the wind, and the small she-kit shivered slightly.

The dark pine tree forest was quiet and cool, the only sound being the occasional tweet of a bird. Thistlekit breathed in the fresh air and purred, happy to be out of camp. Her senses were on high alert, it was as if she could hear and smell almost everything in the entire forest.

"We should really head back now, Thistlekit..." A small meow sounded from behind her. She turned and rolled her eyes at her sister.

"Oh come on, Rainkit. Lighten up a bit! Doesn't is feel good to be somewhere else besides camp?"

The dark gray she-kit looked around anxiously. "I won't deny that, but kits aren't supposed to leave camp until their 6 moons old for a reason. Anything could be out here!"

Thistlekit huffed and continued to pad through the trees, gazing around in wonder. "The only thing I hear are birds and the leaves in the trees."

Rainkit squeaked in fear, racing over to her sisters side, catching up to her. Thistlekit rolled her eyes again.

"Your such a scaredy-cat."

"Am not!"

"Are!"

Suddenly, an unsettling noise sounded from a mile away, causing Thistlekit to stop, raising her tail in a halting motion.

"What is it...?" Rainkit whimpered.

"I don't know...but there's a scent I can't recognize." Thistlekit padded forward a few paw steps, sniffing the air deeply.
"A few squirrels up north...a bird in the south...and...what is that?"

Thistlekit's fur stood on end and she turned to her sister.

"I'm not sure what it is, but it's big."

Rainkit blinked in confusion. "I will never fully understand how you know that."

Thistlekit purred and puffed out her chest.

"My senses have always been good. But I'm sure many of the warriors have even stronger senses."

Rainkit shook her head knowingly. "Your just being modest. You probably have the best sense of smell, sound and eyesight I've ever seen!"

Thistlekit's claws suddenly unsheathed, and she turned back to the direction of the weird scent.

The forest was quiet for a second, the only sound being the birds.

"Thistlekit?" Rainkit whispered.

"Hush." Thistlekit narrowed her eyes, trying to see deeper into the forest. "Its coming..." she mumbled. "Its coming straight at us!"

Suddenly, a huge red creature leaped from the brush, soaring over the two kits and landing behind them. Thistlekit whipped around to see a growling fox creeping slowly towards them in a hunting crouch.

"A fox..."  Rainkit whimpered. "I've heard stories of these creatures...and I think we're going to be its next meal!"

Thistlekit shoved past her sister, puffing out her fur and arching her back in a hiss.

"Not if I can help it!" She shrieked.

"Thistlekit, don't!" Rainkit yowled.

The fox lunged at Thistlekit in one fluid motion, its teeth bared. Thistlekit leaped to the side, just in time as its huge paws landed on the ground. The fox seemed confused for a few moments, wondering why its small prey wasn't in its grasp.
