It's our past that keeps us alive.
Keeps the memories in our mind
And the more you try to shut them out
The more persistent they become
And force you to remember them forever.

OPPOSITE ME, the wall was covered in a bare white paint. Nearly perfect except for the one small crack that trailed down from the plain ceiling.

I had been staring at this wall for nearly an hour now, since I woke up, or I guessed it was about that long. It was hard to tell really.

The more I try to remember what happened, the harder I find trying.

The bed I am in is actually pretty comfortable, considering the circumstances, and compared to the places I had been staying lately.

I should feel scared, but honestly, I'm too tired and drained to feel anything.

Around three years ago, my father was killed. Then, a year later, my mum was gone as well, leaving me and my little sister, Caitlyn, depending on distant relatives to survive. It was okay for a while – we got by at least. Family sent us money when we were desperate, but then a few 'accidents' later and they disappeared like everything else in my life, and we were left completely on our own.

But then around six months ago Caitlyn died as well.

And then I was alone again. But this time, there was absolutely no one who was going to come and save me. No distant family member ready with a stack of money to support me. No one.

One lovely childhood, right?

The door creaked a little as it was opened.

I didn't even have the energy to turn my head to see who had walked in, and could only listen as the heavy footsteps grew closer to the bed, and I could feel whoever it was looking at me.

Slowly, I turned my eyes sideways and looked at my captor.

Skin slightly tan from the summer sun, his dark brown hair was pushed carelessly away from his matching eyes, which were staring into my own.
