"Oh, I'm so sorry; I really didn't mean to do that. The flour kind of... slipped out of my hands...and...and... yeah"
I held the bag of flour tightly in my hands and opened my eyes enough to see his reaction.
Ryder looked down on his shirt, which now was completely white instead of being dark blue as it once had been. Some flour had also gotten in his brown hair - don't ask me how as I'm shorter than him and it shouldn't be possible for me to do that. He sighed and looked at me. Oh, no, what?
"It's okay, I don't mind. As long as you get most of the flour out of my shirt then it's completely fine", he said and spread his arms out expectantly while closing his eyes.
I sighed. Seriously? Quickly assessing that there weren't any piece of clothI could use, I stepped forward to brush the flour offwith just my hands.
After a few seconds I just couldn't help but notice, the hard, leanmuscles behind his shirt. I was careful, but it was hard to brush the last flour of without touching or patting Ryder's stomach muscles.
Suddenly his stomach began to rumble. Confused I put my palm on his stomach but pulled my hand back quickly as I realized Ryder was laughing. And here I thought there were something wrong with him.
"You really thought I was serious? I was only joking when I told you to do it!" He laughed and some flour fell out of his brown hair, whitening the shoulder-parts of his shirt.
"Idiot, how was I supposed to know? But it was kind of my fault, sorry again", I said eyeing the now light blue shirt.
"Riiiiiiinnnnnnnggggggggg"
Ryder turned around to the oven. I took the potholdersfrom the table beside me and threw them to Ryder.
"Catch"
He catched them without looking and pulled them on. They were baby-blue with pictures of small cupcakes. He also had a matching blue and white-striped apron on. I was forced to wear the pink one - not that I complained, I liked pink - because he had refused to wear the pink one.
He looked rather... cute in the kitchen of the bakery, making cupcakes with that apron and those potholders. I mentally slapped myself again and focused on the cupcakes Ryder was taking out of the oven.
They looked wonderful and smelled just as good. Half of them were lemon cupcakes with lemon curd inside and topped with meringue frosting, which had now been toasted after 2 minutes in the oven. The other half were just normal, vanilla ones. They had to be frosted with peanut-and-salted-caramel-frosting.
I couldn't stop my mouth from watering. Like literally.
"Wow, they look amazing" I said. Ryder nodded and held his hands up for me to high five. But removed his hand the last moment. Resulting in me smacking his face.
"Oww, you just slapped me!" He pouted. I couldn't help but grin. "You deserved it. Who removes his hand the last moment, when the other person wants to high five? Jerk"
In that moment, Lillian came in and smiled broadly when she saw the cupcakes on the table.
"They look beautiful, young people! Is that lemon curd I can smell?"
She ate one of both and was impressed by our cupcakes. I must say Ryder impressed me. He was very good at combining flavors and knew what would work well together and what wouldn't. I would never have guessed, to be honest, and couldn't quite believe it when I found out our job was to create two new recipes, we had never tried before, to prove ourselves worthy of getting the job.
"You are officially working here one or two times in a week. I will send a mail with the dates. When not working you can just find ideas at the internet or in books. Then you can come here and bake your cakes, which we will sell."
We shook hands with her and went out of the door.
"So, partners, eh" He said turning his head in my direction. I rolled my eyes, but for some reason a smile was tugging at the corners of my mouth".
