Heyo! Okay, so this is probably going to be more of a ramble because I have no idea how to even start explaining my thought process behind this story. It was something I was daydreaming about for a couple of months and I just had to start writing it at some point and bam. This happened. I am quite happy with how it is going so far which is always a nice feeling with a book. I never expected people to actually read and enjoy it as well. It has been a wonderful experience. Anyways, onto the more interesting stuff.
So Sîrion's name, in elvish, means Son of the River. I believe it wasn't in Sindarin but Quenya which is a tad posher than Sindarin and isn't used as common among the elves of Middle Earth portrayed in media. That could be wrong but I did try to cross-check many sites to ensure there was some sort of accuracy. His mother was a listener as well though a bit less in tune than Sîrion is at this point in time because her teacher was her mother rather than an Ent and as such, her favourite force to communicate with was the river. Hence living by the river and naming her son after it. Elves in Middle Earth, from my understanding, don't really have last names as we do. Rather it's a title of who was your father. For example, Legolas has the last name of Thranduillion, which means the son of Thranduil. It's purely for the identification of family ties. Sîrion, I have decided, is a bit of an anomaly because he has spent much more time around men than other elves. Despite staying with Elrond until he would be considered an adult elf (or just shy of), he didn't spend the time learning the traditions of elves because he was so distraught and angry about the death of his parents. My boy tends to place the blame on himself despite he was literally far away when it happened and a small child that couldn't have done anything. So after hearing the many last names of men (and even hobbits when in Bree) he decided to make a last name for himself. This is Erynnothlir, which essentially means forest family and shows up on the contract. He did so after staying with Fangorn and found his place among the forest there. Thranduil absolutely thought this was strange. Yeah! I think that's all for name stuff.
Anyways, onto some assumptions that I am making based on Tolkien fan websites. I cross-referred them with my friend who has read the LOTR books more recently than I and so it should be a bit more cannon. Elves do not show emotion typically. They are known as more stoic individuals and don't show what's happening in their minds unless it is to close family or their one love. Speaking of which, elves are said to have one love in life that is like another piece of their soul. Even if one of the partners is to die, they will stay in Valar and will eventually be reincarnated to find their love again. I think that is so beautiful. Anyways although this stoic behaviour, it is a bit inherent to elves since Sîrion wasn't around elves for most of his life, let alone anyone but his mum and dad at the beginning, he is a bit more expressive with feelings. Although he isolates and builds up walls, it's clear when he is upset because of how much more he normally shows. The stoic isolation when he is upset is honestly more like a typical elf's behaviour. He is naturally more of an open, happy being ever since staying Fangorn and so that isolation change isn't what you would see in any other elf. For other elves, it would be brushed off and not affect their behaviour. People wouldn't be able to tell. Onto the hair, once again I deemed it more of a cultural thing rather than inherent to all elves. Having long hair is, to be it crudely, considered a huge turn-on for elves. The longer hair you have, the more beautiful you are, hence why there are so many elves with long hair. This is also why Legolas thought it was odd for Sîrion to purposefully cut his hair shorter. It's just not something he has seen other elves do because of the significance he grew up with in regards to hair.
I think that is all, though if there is more I will just add it to an author's note as I remember other things. So sorry for it to be a bit jumpy and probably not as polished as my other writing. This is very much a stream of consciousness type writing thing since I really had no idea how else to write it. Hopefully, it was informative.
Thank you for all of the support and lovely comments. I am excited to continue this story. Expect another actual update later this week since this is technically not a chapter. Love you all!
