AMANDA "ASIA" ALEXANDER
The entire ride my eyes were glued outside the window. I basked in the beauty that was before me. There were few noticeable changes , but otherwise everything remained the same. No matter where you go in this world, it's truly no better feeling than when you are at home. I have day dreamed about this day from the time I left, to the time my ticket was confirmed. It's so unfortunate that when some people leave they never look back. No matter my circumstances, St.Vincent and the Grenadines will always be that happy place for me.
From the fresh air, lush vegetation, plentiful fruit trees, unspoiled beaches, picturesque waterfalls, ever flowing rivers, mouth watering food, rich culture and warm smiles. What more could one ever need? A simple sustainable living, away from all the pollutants of the outside world which allows you to relax and enjoy life. Sometimes we tend to get caught up and not appreciate what is before us. But the simplicity of an island living feeds your mind and opens it to see that this is all that we need and nothing more.
Just as I was diving deeper into my thought, the jeep came to a sudden halt and Anthony stopped in front of a fruit stall. As we exited, the fruit vendor came around with a vibrant smile plastered on his face. The first thing I noticed was his waist length luscious dreadlocks. He gracefully embraced his greys. Few strands hung on either side of his cheeks and they framed his face beautifully. He placed a spliff to his thick lips then proceeded to light it. I watched as he took a pull then released the smoke into the air. The aroma was always something I enjoyed inhaling unlike cigarettes.
"Ras Benn, gimmie ah coconut fi the sweet girl nuh," Anthony said.
How did he even know what I wanted? I thought. I was actually craving some coconut water and once the jelly was soft that would've been ideal.
"Spragga, yuh kno ah got yuh. Anythin fi de empress," he responded with a smile.
"Yuh war anythin else or yuh good?" he asked.
I glanced around at the table filled with delectable fruits and vegetables. There were mangoes: Julie, Palova, Dibique and Horsea, pineapples, bananas, golden apples, oranges, watermelon, plantains, soursop, tomatoes, flavor peppers and so much more. You name it, Ras Benn had it!
"I want a bag of palova mangoes and a pineapple," I said.
I watched Ras Benn as he skillfully swung the cutlass and carved away at the coconut. For his age he really looked good. His rich dark skin glowed against the sunlight, giving exactly what we consider glass skin. The few wrinkles on his skin definitely did not take away from his features. Ras was aging like fine wine.
"Here yuh go empress," he said as he placed the coconut into my palms.
I responded with a thank you then brought the coconut to my lips. The sweet liquid flowed into my mouth and into my stomach. A few drops rolled down my chin and made its way between my breast. The coconut was now finished. I looked over at Anthony who was sitting adjacent from me on a wooden crate. His eyes were glued to my breast. When he realized I caught him, he quickly looked away.
The brown bodycon dress that I was wearing almost left nothing for the mind to wonder. The shade of brown blended almost too perfectly with my complexion. Then the spandex material accentuated my curves ever so beautifully. My breast aren't huge but quite a handful for any guy. Many would assume that I went to the gym frequently because of my small waist, thick thighs and perfectly proportionate derriere. Not too big nor small but perfect. I couldn't tell when last the gym saw me.
Anthony paid Ras Benn for the items we took and we said our goodbyes. Ras Benn embraced me in a warm hug and wished me a safe journey back to my yard.
We continued our journey to Brighton Village. Along the way my aunt texted me to ask where I was. I had to reassure her that I'm on my way home and Anthony wasn't any threat. She anguished over the fact that she should have picked me up instead. That was however impossible as she was all the way in Mustique. My aunt spent most of her days there because she worked as the house keeping manager for the Cotton House hotel. She has been with the company for almost twenty five years, if my memory serves me correct.
I glanced over at Anthony who was very much concentrated on the road ahead. He had undone the top buttons of his shirt and uncuffed his sleeves. I could've now seen the gold chain that hung around his neck. I swiftly turned my head around when I saw him looking back at me.
"Yuh kno if yuh keep lookin at mi like dah, yuh ago put yuh self inna problems," he said.
"It ain't nothing I can't handle," I responded with a sly smile.
He simply chuckled then turned into the Belvedere gap.
