I jolted awake breathing heavily from my dream/nightmare that I just had. My face was wet. Did I cry in my sleep? Shaking my head I glanced at my clock. Ugh! It was only 5:30 A.M. Groaning, I got up anyway. After pulling my socks on, I walked to the window. The sun wasn't going to be up for a while, so I had time to settle down. I limped to the kitchen and took the breakfast cheesecake out of the fridge. I put it back into the fridge after deciding I wasn't hungry anymore. By the time Kirstin and Scott walked into the kitchen I was asleep on the couch. I woke suddenly when I sensed movement. Kirstin sat down next to me with worried eyes.
Kirstin: You okay?
Me: Yeah, I just had a nightmare last night.
Kirstin: Do you want to talk about it?
Me: Sure. Can we go into my room?
Kirstin: Of course.
Scott smiled at us as Kirstin helped me to my room. Something felt like I wanted to just lean into her. Once inside my room, I walked to my bed as Kirstin shut the door. She looked at me with concerned eyes. She sat down next to me as I took a deep breath. I sighed before telling her my nightmare. When I was done a look of fear and almost horror crossed over her face. I became a little worried about why she had responded that way. How long was I going to be able to last? She shook her head and grabbed me into a hug. She clearly understood that this was a hard nightmare to have. I just allowed her to help comfort me. We sat there and when she finally let me go, Mitch walked into the room.
Mitch: You two okay?
Me: Yeah, thanks to Kirstin.
I gave her a slight smile then got up. I was ready to face this day head-on. I turned to the window and looked out. The trees had a layer of ice on the branches. I could see that several branches had broken off due to the ice weighing them down. Kirstin walked up beside me.
Kirstin: The power lines look a little weighed down. Do you think that they will snap?
Me: Hopefully not.
I forced my voice to sound normal. I felt a hand on my shoulder and saw that it was Mitch.
Mitch: Even if they do snap we trust you to keep us warm and safe.
Me: Really?
Mitch: Of course. Do You think that we don't trust you?
I remained quiet as Mitch looked at me. Once I saw his face I turned towards him, which allowed him to continue what he was saying.
Mitch: Listen, I don't know who told you or how you got the idea, but we trusted you as soon as you allowed us to stay. It's more than what some people did.
I stared ahead as the thoughts of Monday flowed back. Okay now, this was a puzzle. I had received pieces over the past three days. On Monday, I saw the bruise and cut on Kirstin. Monday night I overheard Kirstin and Scott having a conversation that led to Scott becoming agitated because of something that Kirstin said. Then yesterday, Scott had kept an eye on Kirstin and kept making sure that she was okay or needed to rest. Last night Scott told Kirstin to take it easy. And I don't know if this has anything to do with the situation, but I had a nightmare that made Kirstin get a strange look on her face after I told her. Now Mitch was saying something about how I did more than other people did? The pieces were coming together slowly and before too long I was going to have the completed puzzle. Without them telling me.
Mitch: You okay Kailyn?
Me: Yeah, why do you ask?
Mitch: You were just zoned out. Are you sure you're okay?
