I woke up Friday morning and groaned as I looked at the calendar. Today was my birthday but I didn't feel like celebrating. The day felt dreary and cloudy even though the sun was shining. I shivered as my skin touched the cold air. I put my foot on the ground then attempted to stand up but collapsed as my leg gave out. Mitch rushed into my room and helped me stand. I didn't stand on my right leg.

Mitch: Are you okay Kailyn? What happened?

Me: My leg gave out, and I couldn't catch myself. I can't feel my right leg.

Mitch: You need to rest.

His tone was not as comforting as last night. He was saying it like an order.

Me: Maybe in the livi-

I stopped as I felt a sharp pain in my thigh. Mitch looked at me then forced me to lay back down.

Mitch: No, you are staying here.

I narrowed my eyes but then looked out the window. Water was dripping slowly from the icicles hanging from the roof. Was it thawing? Maybe we could get Kirstin to the hospital after all! I looked at Mitch slightly smiling.

Me: Look! I think it's starting to warm up! If it gets warmer today we might be able to get out of this house.

Mitch: It seems like it. Let me go tell Scott!

He walked quickly to the office and told Scott. Malone walked into my room and sat down next to me.

Malone: I understand that it may be thawing, but they won't send anyone out until tomorrow.

Me: Why can't we take her to the hospital?

Malone: They don't advise it.

Me: But Kirstin...

My voice trailed off as I closed my eyes. Malone remained quiet as she waited for me to continue.

Me: She will die if she doesn't get to the hospital and Mitch won't let me get out of the bed.

Malone: Why?

Me: I sprained my ankle Monday night, and now I can't walk.

Malone: Why in the world did you not tell me?

Me: I wanted to get home and I knew if I told you on Monday you would have asked a lot of questions.

Malone: I see. You're right I would have. I am sorry.

Me: We have to get Kirstin to the hospital before it's too late.

Malone remained quiet as Mitch walked into the room. My heart dropped again as he sat down and looked at me.

Mitch: Scott told me that they won't even accept patients until tomorrow, so we can't even drive her there.

I just rolled over and buried my head in the covers. Mitch didn't know what to do and neither did Malone. Malone just left the room leaving me and Mitch in my bedroom. Mitch hummed another song, which made me end up leaning on him. He held me close as if I were Kirstin as he continued to hum softly. Scott came into the room making me jump.

Scott: Calm down Kailyn. She's okay. I am just coming to check on you.

My heart was pounding, and I was scared that Kirstin had died. Scott moved to my side and motioned to Mitch. Mitch nodded and stood up before he walked out of the room. Scott looked at me as I didn't hear that he had said "She's okay" He placed his hand on my shoulder before smiling softly.

Scott: Kailyn, Kirstin is not dead. She is going to be okay. She's resting right now. It's okay.

His voice was calm and comforting. He pulled me into a hug and I just sat there as the tears that couldn't fall yesterday finally fell as I leaned into him. Scott just sat there continuing to comfort me as Mitch hadn't even been able to do. He held me close as I cried.
