...Dream's brother was in the tree. Dream shouldn't have been surprised.
His brother had been crawling and climbing over their mother's roots before he even started walking. Dream felt about ready to have a heart attack-could he have a heart attack?- when he spotted his brother up there.
Dream focused on the tree. He took a deep breath, ran, and jumped.
He scrambled to gain purchase on one of the lower hanging branches. He glanced at his brother and refocused on the branch. He swung back and forth until he gained enough momentum to swing his leg over the branch.
The momentum almost made Dream fall off the branch, almost.
Dream clung to the tree.
He looked back to his brother and searched for a path up to him. He found it.
He stood up on the branch, wavering only for a moment, before continuing to climb the tree and jumping to the branches harder to reach.
Dream eventually made it to the branch his brother was sitting on. His brother thankfully in the same spot as when he first spotted him up there.
Dream scrambled to reach his brother... Only for that to be, quite frankly put, his literal downfall.
Before Dream had time to process it he found himself falling.
Dream was falling and the first thought in his mind was 'What a dumb way to die.' It reminded him of Sapnap funnily enough, doing dumb stuff.
Dream then realized that something was holding on to his leg.
He looked up and, much to his surprise, his brother was holding him up. He was struggling, but still holding him up all the same.
Dream was proud, but worried that his brother may fall with him.
Slowly and steadily, he was pulled back up onto the branch.
It was somewhat embarrassing, needing to be pulled up by who he considered his younger sibling, and he had the sense that their mother was laughing at him.
By the time Dream was fully back on the branch, his brother was panting from the effort.
He smiled proudly at his brother, pushing past the embarrassment of having fallen in the first place.
His brother puffed out his chest in pride in response, face lighting up with happiness 'just like Tommy used to for his friends and Wilbur'
Dream's froze at the thought, not sure what to think.
He ignored it in favor of focusing on his younger brother's now concerned expression, hopefully giving a smile more reassuring than he felt.
His younger brother reluctantly seemed to accept with an awkward smile of his own.
For the first time since being here, Dream really wished he had his mask back.
As they both started to make their way down the tree, Dream felt a sudden wave of unease flood him.
He knew deep down that his mask hadn't been on his face, but he was so used to having it all the time.
There also wasn't anyone but his brother and the tree around.
He didn't really need his mask, so he ignored the fact it was gone.
Dream still didn't need to hide his face from his brother but... What if other people come here?
He wasn't keen on having strangers see his face.
Sure his brother used to be a stranger but, he was- is- still young. He's also no longer a stranger.
Dream also isn't keen on strangers being able to read his expressions.
He feels so exposed without his mask.
He can't help but sigh.
There may be little to no signs of civilization near here but...
Dream would like to have something just in case.
He can make a new mask.
It won't be the same but, that doesn't matter much.
Not like he should worry about a mask he doesn't have anymore.
He shouldn't be attached to something gone.
He's gonna make a new mask.
...But for now...
He refocuses on his brother.
...He can afford to not have a mask, despite the feeling of crawling in his skin.
He just needs to look after his brother for now.
.
.
.
Crap. He's in the tree again.
