We've talked about what makes a good character, but careful of these traps!

No consistency. Even though characters change and develop over time, you need to make sure the characters have the same behavior over the course of the story. Don't change how they act just for convenience of the story. Don't have your character go from being a "shoot first, ask questions later" type of person, then suddenly have them be understanding and open-minded, for example.Never letting the characters learn anything. The worst thing you could do is have a character go through something that makes them learn something, and then just go right back to their antics. This is a big problem in side characters. If a character learned their lesson, prove it to us!Having someone's character only be their backstory, not actual personality traits. A character's backstory is a huge part of them, but there's more to them than that. Example: If your character's parents died, don't make so that's the only thing I really know about them.
