Early the next morning, Jack and Gibbs awoke to the sound of a light knock on the door.
"Mrs. Gibbs?" the woman asked as she entered the room. Jack nodded. "I'm Nurse Sidney. The doctor sent me to take care of your discharge. How are you feeling this morning?" she asked.
Jack shrugged. She didn't feel great but she didn't feel like she was dying either. When the nurse realized she wasn't going to get any more answer than that, she went on.
"I have the results of your blood test from yesterday." she told her as she lifted up a page from her clipboard. Jack looked at Gibbs and then back at the nurse, waiting for her to continue. "You're about 8 weeks along." she told them.
Jack looked at Gibbs again, trying to find some kind of reassurance in his eyes. She was relieved that that meant she could have an ultrasound, and at the same time, the whole idea of this pregnancy still terrified her and that would only make it feel more real. Gibbs took her hand and squeezed it, giving her the comfort and reassurance she needed.
"The doctor told me that you would probably want to make your first ultrasound appointment." the nurse went on once they both looked up at her again. "We can do that now if you'd like." she offered. The couple looked at each other and both nodded. Once the nurse discussed some dates with them, she went to make the appointment. After about 10 minutes, she came back.
"I talked to the doctor. I'm going to check your vitals Mrs. Gibbs, and as long as everything looks good, you're free to go. Mr. Gibbs, I have her discharge paperwork right out there for you to fill out." she said, pointing to the hallway. He nodded and kissed Jack's forehead.
"I'll be right back." he told her.
Once he finished with the paperwork and talked to the doctor, he came back into the room to find that the nurse was finishing up too.
"Everything looks pretty normal considering your condition." she told Jack. "You might experience some dizziness and feel weak during the next few days, but that's nothing to worry about. Just make sure not to do anything strenuous and get plenty of rest."
"Thank you." Gibbs said. "Is there anything else we need to do before she can go?"
"No, that's everything."
"Okay, perfect." Gibbs said and went over to Jack, carefully picking her up and carrying her to the door where the nurse was standing.
"I'm sorry Mr. Gibbs, but it's standard procedure that after any kind of operation or transfusion, a nurse must bring the patient out of the hospital in a wheelchair." she told him.
"Is it necessary for her safety?" he asked.
"No, not really...but it's part of our procedure and I'm required to follow it."
"We won't tell anyone." Gibbs replied and kept walking. The nurse called after him a couple of times but he ignored her and kept walking until he reached the exit of the hospital and then finally the car.
Gibbs lifted Jack into the car and gave her a quick kiss before going around to his side. Once they were both in, Jack reached for her husband's hand. "Thank you." she said appreciatively.
"For what?" he wondered.
"For not letting them bring me down here."
"That wasn't going to happen, Jack. I had no intention of letting anyone take you away from me." he assured her and kissed her temple. "Ready to go home?" he asked and she nodded.
"Let's go." she said, not letting go of his hand. Less than halfway into the drive home, Gibbs looked over at her and saw that she had fallen asleep. He lifted her hand up and kissed it softly.
