Contrite Part I

"They've got to be in bed for their second nap today." Ester said out towards the carriage window, Anthony rolled his eyes in a teasing manner.

"Es, I'm rather enjoying a small time away." Ester tried not to whack him with her fan but she knew that was improper. She needed to work on her societal skills before Lady Whistledown wrote an article solely about The Viscountess who abused the Viscount.

"How can you say that? It hasn't even been three months since they've been born." She was switching windows to look at, tired of looking at this side of the growing brown/green grass.

"I'm just stating they're in a house of experienced caregivers and Daphne. We are enjoying the four days of no bottles, breast milk or belching while we can. Who knows how long we will have before our next adventure." Ester raised an eyebrow.

"I wouldn't call seeing my sister and brother and law hanging an adventure, Anthony." Anthony realized he'd struck a cord but at the same time, to him they were guilty (with proof) and they deserved their punishment.

Here was his selfless wife, suffering every day because of the unknown and sudden causes of her parents death taking all the brutality of the pain. He wasn't surprised when she only packed one day dress with any color in it.

"I apologize, that was insensitive of me." Nothing more to it than a simple apology. When Ester gave a soft smile he knew that all was well..for the moment.

"Why don't we talk about something else, like Eloise for example and her debut." Ester looked away from the window and blue met brown.

"What's wrong with Eloise's debut?" Anthony looked at Ester like she had lost her mind. Ester didn't understand why he was so upset.

"You don't think she's nervous or confused about her duties?" Ester folded her hands on his own.

"Anthony..Eloise has a lot of pressure on her. In my opinion unnecessary pressure. The poor child doesn't even want to do this and she has too. She likes reading, education, and writing. Not dancing, courting and marriage. That was Daphne."

Anthony squeezed Ester's hands and continued on his rant.

"I know, I just need her to find someone suitable. Someone who can love her for who she is, while being able to support her and continue to love her through her...fits." Ester uncurled her hands and gave a soft giggle.

"All women have fits Anthony. Each one is just different. Surely you should know this buy now!" Anthony gasped loudly, hand to his chest.

"Women have fits! Well I never heard such a scandalous thing!" Ester laughed so hard she thought she would upset her pants (because after giving birth--it happens--). "Ester Bridgerton would never have a fit!" Anthony started to laugh and cough from making his voice so high pitched and airy.

Then the both of them were laughing harder than they had in a long time. Hitting a large pot hole on the dirt road and the two of them landing sprawled all over the carriage had them only laughing harder.

The coachman and the footman riding in front with the reins in their hands couldn't help but look at each other, one with a brown handlebar mustache.

"Do you think they know we can hear them?" The older one, with the gray hair whose name was Desmond just laughed a light chuckle.

"If they do, I don't think they mind." With that they let the horses lead the way to Le Goose at the instruction of their master. Listening to the recurring laughter of the happy couple down below.
