05. LEARNER'S PERMIT
"CHUPACABRA?" Jackie chimed in to the conversation between the grownups. It's been about a week since the group first stayed at Hershel's farm. For the first time in months Jackie felt at home.
It hasn't been the first time that Jackie has heard of this "Chupacabra", his classmates at school used to tell the story of the vampiric monster that drank the blood of other creatures. The name of the monster sent a deep shiver trough his body.
"First night in camp, Daryl tells us that the whole thing reminds him of that time he went squirrel huntin' and he saw a chupacabra." Dale told and raised his brows sarcastically.
The men of the group, including Jackie, were gathered around a truck with a map splayed out on top. The search for Sophia didn't stop.
Jimmy, Hershel's youngest daughters boyfriend, let out a scoff at the story.
"What are you laughing at, jackass?" Daryl glared at him.
"So, you believe a blood sucking dog?" Rick questioned, his face covered in amusement.
"You believe dead people walking around?" Daryl shot back.
Daryl strapped his crossbow to his shoulder and set out into the forest. Jackie wasted no time following him.
"You're not coming." Daryl didn't even need to turn around to know that the kid was following him.
"You can't stop me." Jackie said, almost too confidently. "Besides, remember that time in the forest? I can be very quiet and fast!"
Daryl shot him a fast displeased look, "Why do you choose to put yourself in danger? You're a kid, stay with the other runts."
"Because I want to find Sophia-"
Daryl stopped in his tracks, they had walked quiet the distance from their camp. "So do I, and I don't need a kid slowing me down!"
It had been the first time the man had yelled at Jackie. Deep down Jackie wanted to turn away and run back, but he bit his tongue and swallowed. "My dad is dead." He said, his eyes stung. "And now it's me, my mom and my brother. I want to protect them, cause now I'm the man of the family. Teach me to be a man like you. Teach me to protect them." He sniffled. "Please."
Daryl stared at Jackie, at the skinny six year old crying in front of him. He hated that Jackie reminded himself of him when he was younger. So he thought for a second, huffed out and undid the sheath of his hunting knife and strapped it to Jackie's hip.
Daryl's action surprised Jackie as he stared at the man wide eyed.
"If you die, it's not on me." Daryl said as he stared to trek back into the forest. "And if you want to be a man, quit with the cryin'."
