It was just before sunrise and Cadence laid fast asleep in her bedroom. It was raining outside, droplets slapping against her. She always slept the best when it was raining. She loved the sounds of the wind, the smell in their air as it poured.

She was exhausted after the night before. She had been up half the night with Hunter, who was suffering from a stomach bug. It had been just three hours before that he had finally fell asleep. She knew it would be only a few days until Hayden would have it too. It always worked like that. One would get sick and a couple days later, the other would. They spent a lot of time together, after all. Outside of school, they were the only kids their age around.

Cadence was a light sleeper usually. That night, however, she slept better than she had in months.

She was so deeply asleep, she hadn't heard the door to her room slowly creep open.

In a blur, Klaus had appeared before her bedside, not that she realized given that she was sleep. He sighed as his eyes softened at the sight of her sleeping body. She looked far more peaceful than she did when she was awake.

The whole city knew that Klaus hadn't left the compound in months since his child's 'death'. What they didn't know was that every few nights, he crept out from hiding just before dusk. He'd find himself at Cadence's as she slept. He felt the need to watch over her and the twins, to make sure they were safe from those who wished to harm the people he cared about. Even if they didn't know it.

Deep down, he knew they were safe but he still felt the need to check and make sure here and there. It pained him not to be able to see them, to talk to him. To be truthful, he missed them.

After centuries of refusing to get close to anyone, to allow them to know the real him, Klaus had opened himself to not just Cadence, but her children as well. But at what cost? They now had targets on their back.

Klaus sighed deeply as he moved toward the door. Hearing Cadence stir in her sleep, he sped out of the room in case she woke up.

He stepped into the hallway, only to pause at the sight of Hayden standing at the doorway of his room. The half asleep boy rubbed his eyes, only to frown at the sight of Klaus.

Klaus stared back at him, just as surprised. He placed a finger to his lips, telling Hayden to be quiet.

"Klaus--" Hayden began to talk but before he could finish, the man had disappeared as quick as he had appeared.

Hayden let out a huff, a part of him looking disappointed. It had been months since had seen the man.

Within months of meeting not just Klaus, but also his real father, Hayden had lost them both not too long after.
