— 36. Been there, done that

In order to distract Klaus, Cadence found herself at a bar on the way, bourbon in hand. She smirked to herself, knowing Klaus was waiting in the car for her. She knew he must have been growing impatient. She claimed she had to use the bathroom. It was twenty minutes later.

"Wait in the car' you said. 'I'll be right back,' you said," Klaus complained as he stormed into the bar.

Cadence smiled and shrugged. She tightly gripped her glass, sipping on it slowly to be dramatic.

"Did I not sufficiently explain to you the urgency of this endeavor?" He continued and Cadence slammed her cup on the counter.

"You're the one who's wasted my day, dragging me into this foolishness once again," She snapped at him angrily, "It's obvious what's going on here. Your stupid revenge fantasy. I'm one to talk but come on!" She laughed humorlessly as she gestured to herself, "Why do I possibly need to be apart of this? Why couldn't you just do this by yourself and leave me out of it? Excuse me if I need a little drink before the maiming begins."

"I suppose this was your plan all along," Klaus retorted and Cadence glared at him, "Ply me with alcohol, giving you time to warn Davina to flee?"

"You have every right to kill Mikael. But why did you have to rope me in, huh?" She snapped at him angrily and leaned in her seat, "You could've used your little vampire hearing to listen to that phone call and go about your business. I wouldn't have even noticed. So tell me," She stood up and stepped toward him, "What do you want from me, Klaus?"

She scoffed and circled him as he avoided to meet her gaze. "You need someone to confide in, huh? Someone to agree with you on your rash decision? A drinking buddy? A partner in crime?" She continued, practically trembling with anger, "You abandoned me. And now you want to pop out of nowhere because you're lonely. That isn't fair to me. You claimed to do it protect me but you forget I haven't been safe since the moment I was born. I've been fighting my entire life and I will continue to, with or without you being around. So tell me...What the hell do you want from me?"

Klaus sighed, a shameful look on his face as he moved to speak up. "I've missed your presence, what can I say?" He spoke almost sarcastically and Cadence growled.

She wasn't surprised, knowing he wouldn't speak his true feelings. He would've months ago but everything had changed. At least Cadence did. He told her to surround herself with immortals, she'd never lose someone again. And he left anyway.

He gestured to the table and Cadence hesitantly followed him to sit down.

"What's the plan?" Cadence questioned and Klaus knew it was because she had given up. She poured her heart out and he answered with one sentence.

"You want Mikael dead, but how are we going to do it? You don't have the stake, he does," She wondered and Klaus nearly smiled.

We.

Klaus had missed that word more than he expected. He wondered if she had even realized it, given she was angry with him.

He raised his glass and Cadence followed, the two clinking glasses.

___

An hour had passed and the two remained at the table, Klaus ranting about Mikael and the past. She listened patiently, some of it he had told her months before.
