Azriel stayed beside Inei, watching the three figures carefully as one of the two smaller humans stepped forwards, eyeing them with distaste.

“I speak for our leader. You said you were interested in an alliance?”

Azriel kept his face neutral as he considered the outcomes of this meeting.

It could go well enough to secure someone within this group, or badly enough that it would end in violence.

The best thing they could do at the moment was continue the charade, but Inei seemed to have already figured this out.

“Yes. We need some assistance with a problem here in the human lands, and who better to ally with than humans themselves?”

Azriel admired the way she made her voice drip with false arrogance, making her seem less careful and more susceptible to influence. He took pride in the fact that she had learned how to deal with people like this so well, to the point that she rivaled even him within his network of spies.

The human took the bait, his mouth twisting upwards like he won his victory.

“What will you give us in return?”

Inei paused, considering.

Who is the biggest threat to us within Prythian as of this moment?”

She asked him silently, and he immediately responded, “Beron. We haven’t heard anything recently but rumor is he’s gathering troops in the human lands for some reason. We could give the human information on that.”

Azriel sensed her faint agreement.

“I could give you information on fae movements within human territory.”

The tall male in the back shifted, his head tilting, but the one in front spoke again.

“How soon should you need our assistance?”

Inei glanced back at him.

They should wait a few weeks to let things cool down and to make a plan.

Inei looked back, her mouth flattening, the only sign of her reluctance. “Within the month.”

The male nodded, looked to the side where the other male nodded, his eyes sharp.

“Let us speak with the woman alone.” The man on the right said, and Azriel tensed.

There was no way that he would let her go alone with the same humans responsible for Hale. Images of her hanging from the side of a house flashed through his mind-

“Fine, but make it quick.”

Azriel snapped his head to her.

“What.” He seethed, and she cast him a soft glance.

“Just watch from your shadows or trail from above. They just said alone, not out of sight.”

The human on the left grunted and the tallest motioned for her to follow, which she did after brushing her hand against Azriel’s one last time.

“I’ll be back in a minute.”

He stood rooted in place watching her go, his hand tingling from the contact.

She could take care of herself, and she wasn’t wrong about trailing them.

Azriel swallowed and looked down.

“Just be safe.”

Inei kept her hand over Saoirse casually, eyeing the taller human that tagged along with the smaller human that spoke originally.
